Horse and Quad Trails, Wine Valley Adventures

Wine Valley Adventures works out of Vrede en Lust where the R45 meets the Simondium-Klapmuts road, and runs three lines side by side. Horse trails go from an hour to a full day, some of them with wine tasting built in and one that runs in the evening by moonlight. Quad trails run thirty minutes to two hours. Carriage trails cover the same ground at walking pace, which suits anyone who would rather not ride. Everybody gets a helmet fitting and a briefing, so arrive half an hour early.

Horse Riding at Boschendal

Boschendal runs the rides itself and sells them by skill level rather than by route, which means a beginner is not put out behind someone who rides every weekend. Weekday slots run four deep from ten in the morning to five in the afternoon, weekends three. There are fifteen minute pony rides for small children on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and unbookable ones alongside the picnics at weekends.

Aquila Private Game Reserve Day Safari

Aquila sits about a hundred and seventy kilometres from Cape Town, near Touws River, and the day trip is the main business rather than an afterthought. The reserve sells its own half day and full day safaris, from an early morning drive through to a full day that pairs a game drive with lunch and free time, and there are versions on horseback and on quad bikes. Transfers are Aquila’s own, shared or private, with pickups from the Atlantic seaboard and the city between quarter to six and quarter to seven in the morning. Nobody gets through the gate without a confirmed booking.

Cheetah Encounter, Cheetah Outreach

Cheetah Outreach is open every day of the year and runs a ladder of encounters rather than a single product, from a few minutes with an adult cheetah through to a half hour private session. Some involve stroking the animal and some are observation only, and the centre is straightforward about which is which. The feeding tour and the cheetah run are watching, not touching. Alongside the cheetah there are caracal, serval, bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, meerkat and the Anatolian shepherd dogs that anchor the livestock guarding programme.

Cable Waterski at Blue Rock

Blue Rock runs an overhead cable rather than boats, which means it can carry up to ten riders at once and nobody waits for a turn behind a wake. The cable runs at thirty two kilometres an hour and you can wakeboard, waterski, kneeboard or go barefoot on it, with an obstacle park for people who know what they are doing and instructors for people who do not. Everyone who rides has to be able to swim. Hours are seasonal and there is night skiing on Fridays.

Segway Vineyard Tours at Spier

Thirty minutes of training before anything else, then a guided ride out through the vineyard blocks at Spier with the Stellenbosch mountains around you. The short tour runs forty minutes on the vines, the longer one ninety. Riders who cannot complete the training do not go out, which tells you the training is real rather than a formality.

Villiera Wildlife Sanctuary Game Drive

Villiera has set aside 230 hectares alongside its vineyards as a wildlife sanctuary, with twelve dams and more than a hundred thousand indigenous trees planted. A guided drive through it takes about two hours and moves among springbok, kudu, giraffe, bontebok, eland, gemsbok, black wildebeest and Burchell’s zebra. This is not a Big Five reserve and does not set itself up as one. Its value is that it is close to the city and it works with children.

Archery

Archery is offered to visitors across the Cape, from outdoor target ranges near Melkbos to 3D courses through forest at Stellenbosch, Somerset West and on the West Coast. Bows are supplied and no experience is needed.
