Cape Town Activities

Cape Town When the Weather Turns

Cape Town’s weather does not negotiate. A southeaster that was a pleasant breeze at nine can close the cableway by eleven, and a winter front can take the mountain, the beaches and the boat trips off the table in a single morning. The city is built around being outside, which is why a bad forecast can feel as though it has cancelled the whole trip.

It has not. What follows is ten things worth doing when the outdoor plan has been taken away from you. It is not a ranking. It is closer to a running order: the first few need nothing at all from the sky, the middle group is indoors but has to be arranged in advance, and the last two are large indoor spaces for when someone in the party has energy to burn.

That distinction is the useful part. Being indoors is not the same as being weather-proof. A penguin experience closes while the birds are moulting, a public ice session moves around the calendar, and a dive still needs a qualification you either hold or you do not. Every entry below says which it is.

The forecast cannot touch these

Four places where the weather simply stops being a factor once you are through the door. Nothing here is seasonal, nothing depends on visibility or sea state, and none of it changes shape because it is raining.

Entirely indoors. Book ahead.

Axe Throwing, Axe-O

Adventure & Adrenaline · Salt River

The lanes sit under a roof at The Spice Yard in Salt River. Every session is coached from the first throw, and the format stretches from a pair to a corporate group without changing shape.

Sessions run seven days a week and take two hours. Because every one of them is coached, a group that has never thrown an axe and a group that has can be booked into the same format.

Entirely indoors. Walk-ins on a day pass.

Indoor Rock Climbing

Adventure & Adrenaline · Paarden Eiland and Diep River

Two converted warehouses, one in Paarden Eiland and one in Diep River, hold most of Cape Town’s indoor climbing between them. You get bouldering floors, top rope, lead walls and auto-belays, which covers the first-timer who has never tied in and the person training three evenings a week equally well.

Part of the appeal is that it is good climbing. The rest is that it is simply available. They take walk-ins on a day pass, they stay open late, and nothing happening outside changes what happens inside. When the mountain is closed, this is where the city’s climbers go. Bouldering is the easier way in because there is no rope and no partner to organise, and shoes and harnesses are there to rent, so the only thing you have to arrive with is clothes you can move in.

Entirely indoors. Ages 5 to 13.

Wonderdal at Hazendal

Family Activities · Stellenbosch

CapeCurated

Wonderdal is an indoor edutainment centre at Hazendal on the Bottelary Road, built for children between five and thirteen and run in supervised sessions of one or two hours.

For a washed out family day the supervision is the point. The session has a defined start and a defined end, everything happens under one roof, and no part of it depends on being able to move between places outside.

Assegaai Submarine Tour

Cultural Experience · Simon’s Town

Assegaai Submarine Tour in Simon’s Town
Inside the SAS Assegaai submarine
Assegaai Submarine Museum, Simon’s Town

The SAS Assegaai spent its working life underwater and now sits on land at Cole Point, which means you can walk through a Cold War submarine without getting wet. It is a strange and specific hour. The interior has not been prettied up for visitors, so you move through it the way the crew did, sideways past machinery, ducking through bulkheads, in spaces built for equipment first and people second.

What lands hardest is the scale. Boats like this carried a crew for weeks at a time in a hull you can touch both sides of, and no amount of reading about submarine service prepares you for standing inside one. Tours are guided and run every twenty to thirty minutes, so there is rarely much waiting. There is a display area and a Garden of Remembrance alongside if you want longer than the hour the tour itself takes.

Indoors, but arranged in advance

These four are just as dry, but none of them is a decision you can make at the moment the sky closes in. Each has to be set up beforehand, and two carry conditions that have nothing to do with the weather at all.

Indoors. An Open Water qualification is required.

Adventure Diving, Two Oceans Aquarium

Adventure & Adrenaline · V and A Waterfront

The aquarium’s own dive school puts certified divers into three of its exhibits: the ocean exhibit with the stingrays, the shark exhibit with the ragged-tooths, and the kelp forest. All of it happens indoors, inside the aquarium building.

An Open Water qualification or better is required, and a refresher is compulsory if you have not been in the water in six months. Anyone without a card can do the Discover Scuba course instead, which takes three hours and finishes with a dive in the ocean exhibit the same day.

Indoors. Booked 48 hours ahead, and closed while the birds are moulting.

Penguin Experience, Two Oceans Aquarium

Family Activities · V and A Waterfront

Two people at a time go behind the scenes with a bird keeper and the aquarium’s northern rockhopper penguins. The interaction itself runs about thirty minutes, inside a booking of roughly seventy five.

Because it takes two people at a time, it cannot be a same day decision. The booking has to be made and paid forty eight hours ahead, and the experience closes while the birds are moulting or nesting. A bad forecast is not a guarantee that it will be available.

Indoors. Arranged around your dates.

Cape Malay Cooking Class

Cultural Experience · Bo-Kaap

A cook demonstrating at a pot while participants in aprons watch

Bo-Kaap is the obvious photograph and the least interesting way to understand the place. The houses are painted, the streets are steep, and most visitors leave having recorded the colours without learning anything about the people living behind them. A cooking class turns that around, because you spend the time in somebody’s kitchen rather than on their street.

The food is a history lesson that happens to be worth eating. Cape Malay cooking carries centuries of forced migration, trade and adaptation in its spice cupboard, and what came out of it is neither Indian nor Indonesian nor quite anything else. It belongs to this city specifically. You do the work under instruction, and then everyone sits down and eats what they made, which is a considerably better way to spend a slow afternoon than another museum queue.

Indoors. Booked by contacting the store.

Bean to Bar Experience, AFRIKOA

Food & Drink · V and A Waterfront

CapeCurated
CapeCurated
CapeCurated

AFRIKOA makes chocolate from African beans at its pod in Makers Landing, inside the cruise terminal. What you book is a chocolatier led talk and a guided tasting rather than a workshop, with the chocolatiers working behind a glass partition while you taste.

It belongs in the middle of a wrecked afternoon rather than at the start of one. Everything happens under cover inside the terminal building, and it asks nothing of you beyond arriving. Booking is arranged by contacting the store.

Big indoor spaces for restless energy

The problem with a washed out day is rarely boredom. It is a child, or an adult, who was supposed to spend the day moving and now has nowhere to put it. These two are built for exactly that.

Entirely indoors. No booking needed.

Rush Extreme Sports, Claremont

Adventure & Adrenaline · Claremont

CapeCurated
CapeCurated
CapeCurated

Rush is the indoor answer to a southerly. Interconnected trampolines, foam pits, climbing walls, extreme dodgeball, a battle beam and a ninja warrior course fill a building in Claremont, and none of it notices what the wind is doing outside.

Two practical things. Grip socks are compulsory and a waiver has to be signed before anyone jumps, and the hours split between term time and school holidays, so the session you want may not run on the day you want it.

Indoors. Public sessions move, so check the day before.

Ice Skating, The Ice Station

Family Activities · Goodwood

CapeCurated
CapeCurated
CapeCurated

The Ice Station opened with GrandWest in December 2000 and holds a full sixty by thirty metre Olympic sheet. Skates are available for hire, and a separate mini rink keeps small children off the main ice. Figure skating and ice hockey clubs are based here.

The one thing to check is the calendar. Public sessions run on a shifting schedule, so confirm the day before rather than driving out to Goodwood on the strength of a bad forecast.

Planning around the weather

The practical move in Cape Town is to hold the outdoor days loosely and keep one or two of these in reserve. Most of this list has to be booked, and the time to arrange it is before you know you need it, because a front arriving is precisely when everyone else books as well.

It is also worth separating the two failures. Some days the weather is merely unpleasant, and the mountain, the coast and the estates are still open to anyone willing to get wet. Other days they are genuinely shut. This list is for the second kind.
