Cape Town Activities
Cape Town with Kids: What Works at Every Age
Travelling with children changes the question from “what is there to do?” to “what will actually work for us?” A five-year-old, a ten-year-old and a fifteen-year-old can have completely different ideas about a good day, and Cape Town has enough variety that nobody needs to spend the holiday compromising all the time.
These are activities rather than places to simply visit. Some work across a wide spread of ages, others become possible as children get older, and a few are exactly the sort of experiences teenagers will still talk about afterwards. Use the age guidance as a starting point, then check the individual activity before booking.
Everyone can join in
Broadly useful across a family rather than universally suitable. Each of these still carries its own restrictions, listed with the activity.
Children paddle with an adult
Sea Kayaking
Water Activities · Simon’s Town, Hout Bay and Three Anchor Bay

A two-seater sea kayak sits low enough that the coast stops being scenery and becomes the thing you are inside. Two hours out of Simon’s Town, Hout Bay or Three Anchor Bay puts you alongside cliffs and kelp at the waterline, at a pace that lets you look properly. The boats are stable, the kayaks, paddles and buoyancy aids are supplied, and no experience is needed.
Wildlife is the reason many people go and the reason nobody can promise anything. Penguins and seals share this water and often come to see what you are, but they are not a scheduled attraction. Wind decides the day more than anything else, which is why morning departures are the most reliable and why a trip is called off rather than pushed through. Children paddle with an adult, so the front seat is available from young.
Family friendly, with no minimum age published
Villiera Wildlife Sanctuary Game Drive
Wildlife Experiences · Koelenhof, Stellenbosch
Villiera set aside 230 hectares next to its vineyards and let it go back to being veld. Twelve dams, marsh, and more than a hundred thousand indigenous trees planted into ground that used to be farmed. A guided drive takes about two hours and moves through it slowly, which is the right speed for a landscape whose interest is in the detail rather than the drama.
You are likely to see giraffe, kudu, springbok and zebra. This is not a Big Five reserve and it does not present itself as one, which is precisely what makes it work. Nobody is chasing a Big Five checklist, so the experience is about spending time in the landscape and seeing the wildlife that lives there rather than racing between headline sightings. The practical argument is just as strong. It is close to Cape Town, it takes an afternoon rather than a journey, and it puts you among large animals without a four-hour drive at either end.
For younger kids
Built for small children rather than adapted for them, which is the difference between a child joining in and a child being tolerated.
Courses from age 3, with height minimums on the higher routes
Acrobranch Constantia
Adventure & Adrenaline · Constantia Nek

Four courses run through the forest canopy at Constantia Nek, and they are built as a progression rather than a set of alternatives. The first is low, short and designed for very small children. The last asks for height tolerance and some nerve. In between, the obstacles get further off the ground and the crossings get less forgiving, so a group can spread itself across the courses and still be in the same wood.
What makes it work is the trees. This is not a frame in a field with netting bolted to it. The forest at Constantia Nek is dense, the platforms are built into real trunks, and the thing you are moving through is a canopy rather than a structure. Harnesses and briefing are part of the booking, and the courses run to published height minimums as well as ages, which is worth checking against the shortest person in your group rather than the youngest.
From age 3, with three to seven year olds riding with an adult
Cool Runnings Toboggan Park
Adventure & Adrenaline · Tygervalley

A toboggan on a steel track, 1.25 kilometres of twists, turns and drops, and a brake lever you control yourself. That last part is the whole appeal. Nothing is deciding your speed for you, so the same track can be a gentle roll or a fast one depending entirely on how much you leave the lever alone, and two people on the same run can have completely different afternoons.
Africa’s first downhill tobogganing track, and still a straightforward proposition. A run takes a few minutes, which makes it the sort of thing you do several times rather than once. Riders need to be at least three, and three to seven year olds ride with an adult of fifteen or older, so the youngest are on the track rather than watching from a fence. It is outdoors and on a steel rail, so the track may close in wet weather.
Playground zones for ages 1 to 5 and 5 to 12
Polkadraai Farm
Family Activities · Stellenbosch

Strawberry picking is what Polkadraai is known for, and it is worth being precise about it, because it runs from September to January and not the rest of the year. In season you walk the rows and fill your own punnet, which takes twenty to thirty minutes and is the rare farm activity where the doing and the eating are the same thing. Bad weather can interrupt it.
Outside the picking months the farm keeps working, and so does everything else on it. Mini golf, pedal karts, tractor rides, pony rides and a bike park stay open year round. The playground is split by age, with a toddler section for one to five year olds and a junior section for five to twelve, which sounds like a small detail until you have watched a four-year-old try to keep up with ten-year-olds on the same equipment.
For school-age explorers
The age at which most of Cape Town opens up, and the point where curiosity starts doing more work than novelty.
Best suited to children aged 8 and older
Assegaai Submarine Tour
Cultural Experience · Simon’s Town

The SAS Assegaai spent its working life underwater and now sits on land at Cole Point, which means you can walk through a Cold War submarine without getting wet. It is a strange and specific hour. The interior has not been prettied up for visitors, so you move through it the way the crew did, sideways past machinery, ducking through bulkheads, in spaces built for equipment first and people second.
What lands hardest is the scale. Boats like this carried a crew for weeks at a time in a hull you can touch both sides of, and no amount of reading about submarine service prepares you for standing inside one. Tours are guided and run every twenty to thirty minutes, so there is rarely much waiting. There is a display area and a Garden of Remembrance alongside if you want longer than the hour the tour itself takes.
From age 5, with 5 to 9 year olds riding tandem with a guide
Cape Canopy Tour
Adventure & Adrenaline · Hottentots Holland

Most zipline operations are built beside a road. This one is not. A 4x4 carries small groups up into the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve before anything starts, and by the time the first cable is in front of you the reserve has closed around the group properly, with mountain valleys, waterfalls and fynbos underneath rather than a car park.
Allow about four and a half hours for a full group, including that transfer and a kilometre of walking out at the end. The walk is worth knowing about in advance, because it is the part that catches out anyone expecting a theme park. The tour is unusually open about who it takes: children from five can ride, younger ones tandem with a guide, and there is no upper age limit. Closed shoes with grip are required rather than suggested. It is weather dependent, and when conditions cancel a tour the operator reschedules or refunds rather than pressing on.
Drivers from age 10, passengers from age 4
Scootours Table Mountain
Adventure & Adrenaline · Table Mountain
A gravity scooter is a heavy-framed thing with fat tyres, proper brakes and no engine, and the point of it is that the mountain does the work. You are fitted with a helmet and gloves, briefed, and then you ride down, which on Table Mountain means a long descent with the city arranging itself underneath you the whole way. It takes about an hour and a half to two hours from briefing to finish.
It asks less of you than it looks like it does. Anyone who can ride and balance a bicycle can drive a scooter, and the guided pace means you are not racing anything. The useful part for a group is that children from four to nine can come along as passengers with an adult rather than driving their own, so the age floor for joining the ride is considerably lower than the age floor for riding solo. Tours run Tuesday to Sunday.
For older kids and teens
Where independence and adrenaline start to matter more than being entertained, and where most family guides quietly give up.
From age 14
Tandem Paragliding
In the Air · Signal Hill or Lion’s Head

Nowhere else does a city of this size let you step off a mountain and fly over the middle of it. The launch is Signal Hill or Lion’s Head, chosen on the day for whichever way the wind is running. You are clipped in alongside a SAHPA-licensed pilot who does all of the flying, and the wing, harness, helmet and reserve are supplied. Your part is to run a few steps and keep running until the ground stops being there.
What follows is quieter than people expect. The city arranges itself below, the Atlantic opens out to one side and Table Mountain stands over everything, and because the wing is moving slowly you have time to actually look. Flights are weather dependent and confirmed on the day. For first-time flyers, the tandem format keeps things simple: the pilot handles the technical side while you concentrate on the experience and the view.
Beach ride from age 12, with pony rides for younger children
Noordhoek Beach Ride, Imhoff Equestrian Centre
Tours & Rides · Kommetjie

The ride leaves the stables at Imhoff Farm, crosses the wetlands behind the dunes and comes out onto the long open sand of Noordhoek Beach. Ninety minutes at walking pace, in groups of no more than five. It is not a lesson and it is not a canter along the surf, it is a long quiet look at one of the best beaches in the country from the only vantage point that suits it.
Riders of all levels are taken, and the walking pace is what makes that possible. The beach ride itself has a minimum age of twelve. Children of eleven and under are not on it, but the stables run a separate fifteen-minute pony ride for them, which has to be arranged in advance so that a pony and a leader are there. The two are different products rather than versions of the same one, and it is worth knowing which you have booked.
Build the day around their age
The easiest family itineraries are the ones that respect what children can actually do rather than trying to make the same plan fit every age. Cape Town makes that easier than most cities. Younger children can have a proper adventure without being dragged through an adult itinerary, while older children and teenagers can move into experiences with considerably more independence and adrenaline.
Keep a couple of options flexible for weather and energy levels, check age and height restrictions before booking, and leave enough room for the activity everybody wants to do twice.
