Adventure Diving, Two Oceans Aquarium

The aquarium’s own dive school puts certified divers into three of its exhibits: the ocean exhibit with the stingrays, the shark exhibit with the ragged-tooths, and the kelp forest. An Open Water qualification or better is required, and a refresher is compulsory if you have not been in the water in six months. Anyone without a card can do the Discover Scuba course instead, which takes three hours and finishes with a dive in the ocean exhibit the same day.

Penguin Experience, Two Oceans Aquarium

Two people at a time join an aquarium bird keeper with the northern rockhopper penguins, which is about as close as this gets anywhere in the city. The interaction itself runs about half an hour and the whole thing, signing in to saying goodbye, takes about seventy five minutes. The booking includes aquarium entry for the rest of the day. It runs Tuesday to Sunday at half past eight in the morning and has to be booked and paid at least forty eight hours ahead. The aquarium closes bookings when the birds are moulting, nesting or being checked over.

Guided Running Tours, Run Cape Town

Run Cape Town runs guided sightseeing runs rather than races. The city route does five, eight or twelve kilometres from the Mouille Point lighthouse past the Castle, City Hall, the Company’s Garden and Bo-Kaap, with the long version adding Green Point Park, the promenade and the Waterfront. The two trail options both meet at Kloof Nek, one taking the contour path across Platteklip towards Devil’s Peak and the other running the spine of Lion’s Head to Signal Hill. Tailor-made routes are arranged on request.

Surf Lessons and Surf Camps, African Soul Surfer

African Soul Surfer sits at Surfer’s Corner in Muizenberg and sells both ends of the thing. A single lesson runs ninety minutes with boards and wetsuits included, capped at six people to an instructor, with an optional free surf afterwards. The camps run two, three, five or seven days and bundle a room, breakfast, a morning lesson and an afternoon free surf, with the afternoons otherwise your own. There is a yoga studio on site looking at the water.

Beach Yoga, Rise Yoga

Annabel Short runs these as drop-ins, which is the useful part if you are here for a week. Beach classes happen at Muizenberg and St James and move or cancel with the weather, announced on a WhatsApp group. When the beach is out there is a studio class on Palmer Road instead. All levels, beginners included, and mats can be borrowed if you ask.

Bugz Family Playpark

Bugz is built for children between two and ten and is unapologetic about it. Adults are not admitted without a child and children are not admitted without an adult. There are outdoor and indoor play areas and a set of rides that run on weekends, public holidays and school holidays, weather permitting. Outside food is not allowed beyond baby food, fruit and water.

Ice Skating, The Ice Station

The Ice Station opened with GrandWest in December 2000 and has a full sixty by thirty metre Olympic sheet, which is rare this far south. Public sessions run through the week on a calendar that shifts, so check the day before, and skates are for hire on all of them. There is a separate mini rink for small children, and the rink hosts figure skating and ice hockey clubs alongside the public sessions.

Rush Extreme Sports, Claremont

Rush is the indoor answer to a southerly. The Claremont site runs interconnected trampolines, foam pits, climbing walls, extreme dodgeball, a battle beam and a ninja warrior course that the other branches do not have. Sessions are an hour or two, everyone signs a waiver, and grip socks are compulsory. Hours split between term time and school holidays, so check before you drive out.

Indoor Karting, Century Karting

Century Karting sits on the mezzanine level of the Canal Walk parking structure and runs on an arrive-and-drive basis, which means no membership, no licence and no need to plan ahead. It is open seven days from nine in the morning until nine at night, with a booking office on weekdays if you want to organise something larger.

Escape Room, Breakout Quest

Breakout Quest runs three rooms in Claremont: Prison Break, Taken and Last Stop Ravine. Each runs sixty minutes and takes two to eight players, with a game master watching and feeding hints when a group stalls. It is a straightforward answer to a wet afternoon in the southern suburbs.
