Cape Town Life Style

Where to Work Out in Cape Town

Most gyms in Cape Town are built for people who live here, and a two week trip is not a membership. The useful question is not which gym is best, it is which places will let you walk in, pay once and train.

Every venue below does exactly that. Some sell a day pass, some sell a single class, one is a municipal swimming pool that charges at the door. They are grouped by the kind of training rather than by suburb, because what you want to do matters more here than how far you have to drive.

Gym floors you can use as a visitor

Five places with equipment, weights and a floor to use, all of which sell access by the day or the week rather than by the year. Two of them are in Hout Bay and are not related to each other, which is worth knowing before you set off.

The closest gym floor to the lower city

Planet Fitness De Waterkant

Gym · City centre

The nearest thing to a proper gym floor for anyone staying around De Waterkant or the lower city, open from five in the morning on weekdays. Beyond the weights there is a steam room, hot studios, Reformer Pilates and a juice bar.

The detail that matters to a visitor is administrative rather than athletic. A day trial is booked through the operator’s own form, and that form accepts a passport number rather than only a South African identity number, which is not true everywhere.

Day, week and month access sold upfront

Velocity Gym Hout Bay

Gym · Hout Bay

A boutique club rather than a chain, at the corner of Chapman’s Peak Drive and Beach Crescent in Scott Estate, between the mountains and the bay. Strength and conditioning zones, a cardio and stretch area, a cross-training studio, and a wellness area with a steam room, sauna and ice bath.

Access is the reason it is here. A day visit, a week membership and a month membership are all sold upfront through the club’s own online portal, with no joining fee and no contract. Stand-up paddleboards can be hired on site, which tells you something about where it is.

CrossFit, Hyrox and an ordinary floor in one place

The Gym Hout Bay

Gym and CrossFit box · Hout Bay

A CrossFit box, Hyrox training and an ordinary gym floor together on Main Road, with a recovery area alongside that includes a sauna and an ice bath. Personal training and Olympic weightlifting instruction are available.

Visitors buy a single drop-in through the gym’s own schedule, or a discounted bundle of sessions, without joining anything. This is the other Hout Bay entry on this list and has no connection to Velocity.

Well equipped, on the seaboard, and usable for a week

BUC Fitness Club

Gym · Sea Point

On the third floor of The Point on Regent Road, with windows facing the Atlantic and Lion’s Head. A boutique club rather than a chain gym, with personal trainers, biokineticists, sports scientists and physiotherapists working on site.

Day packages and week packages are available on request and there is no requirement to sign a long term contract, which makes it one of the few well equipped Atlantic seaboard gyms a short-stay visitor can simply use. It is also home to the first SWEAT 1000 studio in South Africa, which appears separately below.

A gym in an old country club, with a pool

The Bloc Melkbos

Gym and Hyrox club · Melkbosstrand

The Melkbos branch occupies the old Koeberg Club, so alongside the training floor there is a 25 metre swimming pool, a mini golf course and a coffee shop. It has been an official Hyrox training club since 2024, and the timetable runs CrossFit, hybrid and Hyrox work, Olympic weightlifting and aerobic capacity sessions.

Visitors buy a single drop-in or a multi-session bundle without a membership, and the pool takes a drop-in of its own. There are packages aimed specifically at visitors to Cape Town. This is the northern of the two Bloc branches on this list.

Classes and coached training

Four places where somebody tells you what to do for an hour. All of them sell a single session to a non-member, which is the whole point of putting them in a visitor guide, and none of them assumes you arrive with a training history.

One fifty-minute class, and that is the whole commitment

SWEAT 1000 Sea Point

Class studio · Sea Point

A coached fifty-minute class combining treadmill work with weights and bodyweight stations, on the third floor of The Point in Sea Point, a short walk from the promenade.

There is no membership. The studio sells class packages starting at a single class, so a visitor can do one session and leave it there.

Passes sold as once-off purchases

Horizen Gym

Strength studio · Sea Point

A small coached strength studio on Main Road, a few minutes from the Sea Point promenade. Group classes run for all levels alongside the gym floor.

Day, week and holiday passes are sold as once-off purchases through the studio’s own store, with no membership and no commitment, and a separate drop-in covers a single group class. A gym access pass covers unlimited use of the facilities and equipment.

Coached and scaled, so no background is assumed

The Bloc Blouberg

Coached training · Blouberg

The Blouberg branch runs CrossFit, hybrid and Hyrox work and Olympic weightlifting on a coached timetable. Sessions are scaled to the person, so arriving without a CrossFit background is normal rather than awkward.

A single drop-in is valid for any class on the schedule, and session bundles are available, with no membership and no joining fee. The sibling branch at Melkbos appears above.

Olympic lifting, taught, in Woodstock

Stronger Together

Barbell studio · Woodstock

A barbell-focused studio in Woodstock running Olympic weightlifting in ninety minute sessions and progressive strength work in sixty minute sessions, with mobility work alongside.

A sixty minute drop-in is sold to non-members and booked through the studio’s own schedule. It is a registered non-profit and coaches on a trauma-informed model, which is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly.

Climbing and bouldering

Four indoor walls, all of which sell a day pass at the door and hire out the shoes. Two of them are branches of the same operator and are listed separately because they are in different parts of the city, not because they are different businesses.

Sixteen metre walls and a gym in the same building

CityROCK Cape Town

Climbing centre · Paarden Eiland

A 4,000 square metre climbing centre in Paarden Eiland with sixteen metre walls, 180 top-rope anchors and a large bouldering area. Top rope, lead, auto-belay and bouldering are all here, with private, group and advanced coaching.

There is also a strength and cardio gym and a yoga and Pilates studio on site, plus a coffee shop and a gear shop, so it works as a morning rather than an hour. Day passes are sold at the door, so no membership is needed.

Problems from beginner to competition standard

Bloc11 Paarden Eiland

Bouldering gym · Paarden Eiland

A bouldering gym where a day pass covers the walls and the yoga and Pilates studio for as long as you want to stay, with shoes and chalk available to rent. The problems run from beginner level up to competition standard, so a mixed group can climb together.

There is onsite physiotherapy and a cafe with wifi, and the branch runs a free beginner class on Saturday mornings that includes entry and rental shoes. The Diep River branch is below.

Nothing to learn before you start

Bloc11 Diep River

Bouldering gym · Diep River

The southern suburbs branch, where a day pass buys the run of the gym for as long as you want to stay, including the yoga and Pilates studio, with shoes and chalk rented at the desk.

Bouldering uses no ropes, so there is nothing to learn before you start, which makes this the most immediate climbing on the list for somebody who has never done it.

Indoor and outdoor walls in the northern suburbs

HangTime Bellville

Climbing centre · Bellville

The northern suburbs option, with top rope, lead and bouldering across indoor and outdoor walls, an eleven metre indoor wall, and a systems board and campus board for finger and tendon work.

Routes run from about grade 12 to 27, so it covers a first-timer and somebody who climbs properly. Day passes are sold separately from membership, and shoes and a harness can be hired, with the belay device included when you hire the harness.

Something different

Three that do not fit the word gym. A municipal swimming pool, a twenty minute electrical muscle stimulation session, and the training floor of a longevity clinic. All three take a visitor for a single visit, and each solves a problem the others do not.

Lengths in the middle of town, in any weather

Long Street Baths

Public swimming pool · City centre

The City of Cape Town’s indoor swimming pool in the middle of the city, listed by the City as Long Street Indoor Swimming Pool. A 25 metre main pool twelve metres wide, a separate kiddies’ pool, change rooms, showers and lifeguards on duty.

It is one of only a handful of City pools that stay open all year, and entry is on a day pass with no membership, which makes it the most practical place in the city centre to swim lengths whatever the weather is doing. Tuesday mornings are reserved for women.

Twenty minutes, one to one, and that is the dose

BODYTEC Gardens

EMS studio · Gardens

Electrical muscle stimulation runs a current through a suit while you move, and the whole session is twenty minutes with a qualified trainer working with you alone. The studio supplies the suit, the anti-slip socks and the equipment, and there are showers.

That format suits a short stay better than most gyms, because one session is the intended dose rather than a taster for something you are meant to join afterwards. Sessions need at least four nights of recovery between them, and the contraindications are worth reading before you book.

A quiet floor, a sauna and a cold plunge

WellNest Gold

Longevity clinic gym · Bree Street

A physician-led longevity clinic on Bree Street whose gym is open to non-members on a single-day pass. The pass covers the training floor, a sauna and cold plunge, and a lounge to work from between sessions.

It is a calm, uncrowded private floor rather than a busy commercial gym, with high-end racks and InBody body composition analysis available. If what you want is to train without queueing for a rack, this is the entry to look at.

Practical notes

Access. Every venue above lets a visitor train without taking a conventional membership, but the mechanism differs. Some sell a day pass at the door, some sell a single class, and some sell a short pass through their own online store. Where an entry says which, that is from the venue itself.

Booking ahead. The class studios and the coached sessions fill, and several take bookings only through their own schedule rather than by phone. Check the timetable before travelling across the city for a particular session.

Identification. A few operators ask for identity details when you sign up for a trial or a pass. If a form will not accept a passport number, that is worth discovering before you arrive rather than at the desk.

What to bring. Shoes and chalk are rented at every climbing wall on this list. EMS kit is supplied. Swimwear for Long Street Baths. Everywhere else assumes you bring your own training clothes.

Two Hout Bay entries. Velocity Gym Hout Bay in Scott Estate and The Gym Hout Bay on Main Road are unrelated businesses with similar names. Check which one you have booked.

Branches. The Bloc appears twice, at Blouberg and Melkbos, and Bloc11 appears twice, at Paarden Eiland and Diep River. Each pair is one operator in two places.

Choosing one

If you are staying in the city bowl and want a straightforward floor, start with Bree Street or Strand Street. On the Atlantic seaboard, Sea Point has both a gym and a class studio in the same building. Hout Bay has two options and they are not the same place. For climbing, Paarden Eiland has two walls within a few streets of each other, and there is one in Bellville and one in Diep River. And if you would rather swim than lift, Long Street is open every day of the year.

Two things sit alongside this guide rather than inside it. Padel has grown fast enough in Cape Town to need a guide of its own, and the yoga and Pilates studios that sell a single class are covered separately, including the two that share a building with a climbing wall.
