A day pass covers the climbing walls and the yoga and Pilates studio for as long as you want to stay, with shoes and chalk available to rent. No membership is needed, and the problems run from beginner level up to competition standard, so mixed groups can climb together.
Bloc11's Paarden Eiland gym is the operator's second Cape Town bouldering venue, in an industrial block on Auckland Street between the harbour and the N1. It is a ropeless climbing gym: the walls are low enough to jump down from, the floor is deep matting, and there is no belaying to learn before you climb.
Bouldering rewards short bursts of problem solving rather than endurance. Routes are set as coloured sequences of holds and re-set regularly, and they run from beginner problems up to competition-standard ones, so a group with mixed experience can climb together without anyone being left out.
A day pass gives you the run of the gym for as long as you want to stay and includes the yoga and Pilates classes in the studio. Shoes, chalk and everything else you need can be rented at the desk.
Bloc11 runs a free beginner class at 10am every Saturday for first-time visitors, entry and rental shoes included. Classes are kept small, so booking is recommended.
The gym has a cafe with coffee, snacks and wifi, and an onsite physiotherapy practice.
