South Africa's oldest wine estate combines Cape Dutch heritage, award-winning wines and historic cellars in the heart of the Constantia Valley.
Overview
Nestled on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain in the beautiful Constantia Valley, Groot Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine estate and one of Cape Town’s most iconic attractions. Established in 1685 by Governor Simon van der Stel, it blends three centuries of history with award-winning wines, world-class dining and breathtaking scenery, all within a 20-minute drive of the city centre.
Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or visiting your first vineyard, Groot Constantia offers an authentic Cape wine experience without having to travel out to Stellenbosch or Franschhoek.
History
Governor Simon van der Stel selected the fertile slopes of Constantia in 1685 to establish what would become South Africa’s first great wine estate. The cool maritime climate, decomposed granite soils and reliable winter rainfall created ideal conditions for premium wines, and the estate’s historic Grand Constance dessert wine went on to earn international acclaim.
