Overview

Tucked into the dramatic mountain slopes of the Constantia Valley, Constantia Glen is one of Cape Town’s most picturesque boutique wine estates. It combines award-winning wines, spectacular mountain scenery and one of the most beautiful tasting terraces in South Africa, just 20 minutes from the city centre.

The estate is renowned for cool-climate Sauvignon Blancs and elegant Bordeaux-style red blends, every bottle reflecting its unique terroir of steep vineyards, decomposed granite soils and cooling ocean breezes.

History

Although the Constantia Valley’s winemaking dates back to 1685, Constantia Glen is one of its newer estates. The property was purchased by the Waibel family in 2000, who recognised the exceptional potential of the steep mountain slopes and led extensive vineyard redevelopment focused on premium cool-climate wines.

Since those first vineyards were planted, Constantia Glen has established itself as one of the Constantia Valley’s leading boutique wine producers. Careful vineyard development, low-yield farming and meticulous winemaking have earned the estate a reputation for elegant cool-climate wines that reflect the distinctive character of the valley’s mountain slopes. The estate released its first wine in 2005 and today farms around 29 hectares of vineyards across a 60-hectare property on the upper reaches of the Constantiaberg.

Mountain Terroir

Constantia Glen’s vineyards climb the steep upper slopes of the Constantiaberg, where decomposed granite soils, a cool maritime climate and significant day-to-night temperature differences create ideal conditions for premium cool-climate wines. Cooling breezes influenced by both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans slow ripening and help preserve freshness and natural acidity.

The challenging mountain terrain naturally limits yields, and strict crop control allows each vineyard block to produce grapes with exceptional concentration and elegance. It is this terroir – rather than centuries of estate history – that defines Constantia Glen’s identity as a modern, terroir-driven producer.

Wine & Scenic Experiences

Visitors can enjoy seated wine tastings from one of the Cape’s most spectacular tasting terraces, with sweeping views across the Constantia Valley towards vines and mountain peaks. Several tasting options are offered alongside a menu of light dishes and seasonal food pairings.

Relaxed outdoor seating, panoramic mountain views and an intimate, unhurried atmosphere combine to make the terrace one of Constantia Glen’s defining attractions – whether for a wine tasting, a leisurely lunch or an early dinner as the light softens over the valley.
