Bo-Kaap Museum

A restored 1760s home telling the story of Cape Town’s Cape Muslim community.

The Bo-Kaap Museum offers one of the best introductions to the history, culture and traditions of Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap community. Housed in one of the neighbourhood’s oldest surviving homes, the museum tells the story of the Cape Muslim community and the people who settled here after slavery was abolished, preserving a way of life that continues to shape the character of Bo-Kaap today.

Established in 1978, the Bo-Kaap Museum occupies a house dating back to the 1760s and was restored to illustrate the lifestyle of a prosperous nineteenth-century Cape Muslim family. Rather than focusing only on objects behind glass, the museum recreates a lived-in home with period furnishings, household items and displays that place visitors inside the social history of the neighbourhood.

Permanent exhibitions explore the origins of the Bo-Kaap community, the development of Islam at the Cape, slavery, emancipation and the traditions that have shaped the neighbourhood for generations. Historical photographs, documents and everyday artefacts help explain how Bo-Kaap evolved into one of South Africa’s most significant cultural heritage areas.

The museum is best experienced as the starting point for exploring Bo-Kaap itself. After learning about the area’s history, visitors can wander through the colourful streets, admire the Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture, visit nearby mosques and discover local cafés serving traditional Cape Malay cuisine. Together, the museum and neighbourhood provide a deeper understanding of one of Cape Town’s most distinctive communities.
