Castle of Good Hope

Cape Town’s 17th-century pentagonal fortress and a layered museum of colonial history

The Castle of Good Hope combines monumental VOC-era architecture, historic courtyards and museum displays within Cape Town’s oldest surviving colonial building.

The Castle of Good Hope is a five-pointed fortress at the edge of Cape Town’s city centre. Built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679, it replaced an earlier fort and became a centre of colonial military and administrative power at the Cape.

Today the complex is approached as both a major architectural landmark and a place of layered, often difficult history. Visitors can explore its stone walls, gateways and courtyards alongside museum displays that interpret aspects of life, power and conflict at the colonial Cape.

Exhibitions, tours, ceremonies and access arrangements can change. Check the Castle’s official visitor information before travelling, allow time for security procedures and follow instructions within active or restricted areas.
