Perched high on the slopes of the Constantia Valley, Beau Constantia is a modern boutique estate producing handcrafted wines with panoramic views. It’s home to the celebrated Chef’s Warehouse dining experience.
Overview
High on the steep mountain slopes of the Constantia Valley, Beau Constantia is one of Cape Town’s most spectacular boutique wine estates. Renowned for dramatic architecture, panoramic views and premium handcrafted wines, it has quickly become one of South Africa’s most sought-after wine destinations.
Unlike the valley’s historic farms, Beau Constantia is a modern estate focused on small-batch, high-quality wines from vineyards planted on exceptionally steep slopes. Adding to its appeal is the acclaimed Chef’s Warehouse at Beau Constantia, widely regarded as one of the finest dining experiences in the region.
History
Although the Constantia Valley has produced wine since the late 1600s, Beau Constantia is one of the region’s newest additions, established in the early 2000s with a vision to create a boutique winery capable of world-class wines from one of the most challenging vineyard sites in the Cape.
From the outset, Beau Constantia set out to challenge traditional vineyard practices by cultivating some of the steepest slopes in the Cape. After the Du Preez family acquired the property in 2002, extensive alien-clearing and soil studies preceded the planting of the first vines in 2003. Careful site selection, low-yield viticulture and a minimum-intervention philosophy have since established the estate – farming just around 12 hectares of vines – as one of Constantia’s leading boutique producers, despite its relatively young history.
Mountain Vineyards & Terroir
Beau Constantia’s vineyards are planted on exceptionally steep, north-east-facing slopes rising towards the summit of the Vlakkenberg, overlooking the Constantia Valley and False Bay. From the highest points, both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans come into view. Cooling ocean breezes, decomposed granite soils and dramatic elevation changes create ideal conditions for elegant cool-climate wines.
The near-vertiginous terrain means much of the vineyard work must be carried out by hand, helping preserve fruit quality and vineyard health. Under winemaker Megan van der Merwe, the estate’s minimum-intervention approach carries through from ground to glass, producing small-batch wines with a strong sense of place.
Architecture & Dining
Contemporary architecture blends into the mountainside, with a glass-encased tasting room that opens onto uninterrupted panoramic views across the Constantia Valley. The design is permeable to its surroundings, framing the changing seasons of the vineyards as a living backdrop to every tasting.
Together with acclaimed dining at Chef’s Warehouse at Beau Constantia and intimate, seated wine tastings, the estate offers one of Cape Town’s most memorable food-and-wine experiences – a modern, experiential take on a day in the Constantia Valley.
