Overview
Perched on the upper slopes of the Constantia Valley, Klein Constantia is one of South Africa’s most prestigious wine estates and a must-visit for wine lovers exploring Cape Town.
With breathtaking views stretching across the vineyards to False Bay, the estate is internationally celebrated for exceptional cool-climate wines, particularly its legendary dessert wine, Vin de Constance. Originally part of the historic Constantia estate established by Governor Simon van der Stel in 1685, it combines centuries of heritage with modern viticulture. The estate is renowned for elegant Sauvignon Blanc, refined Chardonnay, Bordeaux-style reds and one of the world’s finest natural sweet wines.
History
The story begins in 1685, when Governor Simon van der Stel established the original Constantia estate. After his death the property was divided into smaller farms, one of which became Klein Constantia. During the 18th and early 19th centuries its sweet Constantia wines became favourites of European royalty and literary figures including Napoleon Bonaparte, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and King Frederick the Great.
After a period of decline, extensive research and restoration in the 1980s revived the historic sweet wine, resulting in Vin de Constance. It is now regarded as one of the finest natural sweet wines in the world.
The Estate Today
Klein Constantia covers approximately 146 hectares, with around 70 hectares under vine, carefully managed to prioritise quality over quantity. Visitors enjoy a modern tasting room overlooking False Bay, an outdoor terrace with panoramic vineyard views, an estate wine shop, vineyard walks, beautiful Cape Dutch buildings and peaceful gardens. The result is an intimate, tranquil experience away from the crowds.
Vineyards & Terroir
Climate
A cool maritime climate influenced by the Atlantic and False Bay, with cooling afternoon breezes that slow ripening and preserve natural acidity. These conditions are ideal for aromatic whites.
Soils
Ancient decomposed granite mixed with sandstone and clay. Well-drained soils encourage deep roots and concentrated fruit with excellent minerality.
Elevation
Vineyards rise from roughly 70 to more than 340 metres above sea level, creating multiple microclimates that add complexity and balance.
