The Constantia Nek to Cecilia Forest via the Contour Path is one of the most scenic and accessible hikes on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Beginning at Constantia Nek, the trail follows the famous Contour Path before descending into the cool, indigenous woodlands of Cecilia Forest. Along the way, hikers enjoy sweeping views across the Constantia Valley, False Bay and the southern suburbs while walking beneath dramatic sandstone cliffs and through fragrant fynbos.
Unlike the steeper summit routes, this hike maintains a relatively gentle gradient for much of the journey, making it suitable for most walkers with a moderate level of fitness. The combination of mountain scenery, peaceful forest and excellent viewpoints makes it one of the Cape Peninsula’s most enjoyable half-day hikes.
The trail finishes in the beautiful Cecilia Forest where towering yellowwood trees, flowing streams and shaded pathways provide a welcome contrast to the open mountain slopes above. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing nature walk, birdwatching opportunities or one of Cape Town’s classic contour hikes, this route delivers outstanding scenery without requiring a strenuous climb.
Trail Map
Trail Description
The hike begins at Constantia Nek, where the Contour Path heads north along the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. The well-maintained trail gradually traverses the mountainside through indigenous fynbos, crossing small streams and rocky sections while offering continuous panoramic views across Constantia, the Cape Flats and False Bay.
After approximately 3 kilometres, the trail reaches the upper entrance to Cecilia Forest. Here the landscape changes dramatically as the path descends beneath a dense canopy of ancient yellowwood and stinkwood trees. Wooden bridges cross seasonal streams before the trail continues through one of Table Mountain National Park’s most beautiful indigenous forests.
Most hikers return to Constantia Nek along the same route, although transport can also be arranged from the Cecilia Forest parking area.
Difficulty
This is considered a moderate hike suitable for most hikers with reasonable fitness. The Contour Path itself is relatively gentle, with only gradual elevation changes, although there are occasional rocky and uneven sections requiring careful footing.
The forest descent is straightforward but can become slippery after rain. Hiking shoes with good grip are recommended.
Best Time to Hike
The trail can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Autumn and spring usually provide the most comfortable hiking temperatures and excellent visibility, while winter brings flowing streams and lush green forests. During summer, the forest offers welcome shade, although the exposed Contour Path can become warm during the middle of the day.
Morning hikes generally provide cooler conditions and clearer mountain views.
Safety Tips
Although this is one of the easier Table Mountain hikes, weather conditions can change quickly. Carry sufficient water, wear suitable footwear and bring a light windproof jacket even during summer.
Stay on the marked trails and avoid hiking alone where possible. While the route is regularly used, hikers should remain aware of their surroundings and avoid displaying valuables.
Photography
The Contour Path offers some of the finest panoramic viewpoints on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Excellent photo opportunities include sweeping views across Constantia Valley, False Bay and the mountain cliffs above.
Inside Cecilia Forest, towering yellowwood trees, wooden bridges and flowing streams provide beautiful woodland photography, particularly after winter rainfall when the forest is at its greenest.
Flora & Wildlife
The route passes through two distinct ecosystems. The upper slopes are covered in Cape fynbos, home to proteas, ericas and a wide variety of indigenous flowering plants.
Descending into Cecilia Forest reveals one of Cape Town’s finest indigenous forests, where ancient yellowwoods, stinkwoods and wild olives provide habitat for numerous bird species including Cape batis, sunbirds and African goshawks.
