The Cecilia Waterfall hike is one of the most rewarding short walks on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, leading through the beautiful indigenous woodlands of Cecilia Forest to a picturesque waterfall hidden within Cecilia Ravine. The trail combines shaded forest paths, mountain streams and panoramic viewpoints, making it a favourite for hikers looking for a refreshing escape close to the city.
Starting from the Cecilia Forest parking area on Rhodes Drive, the route follows well-marked trails beneath towering yellowwood and pine trees before climbing gently into the ravine. The highlight is Cecilia Waterfall, where water cascades over rocky cliffs into a cool mountain pool, particularly impressive after winter rainfall. Despite its relatively short distance, the hike feels wonderfully secluded thanks to the dense forest canopy and tranquil surroundings.
Suitable for most hikers with a moderate level of fitness, Cecilia Waterfall offers an excellent introduction to Table Mountain National Park and is one of Cape Town’s most popular waterfall walks.
Trail Map
Trail Description
The hike begins at the Cecilia Forest parking area on Rhodes Drive before following shaded forest trails through indigenous woodland and historic pine plantations. The route climbs steadily beside mountain streams, crossing wooden bridges and rocky sections as it enters Cecilia Ravine.
As the trail ascends, the forest becomes denser and cooler before reaching Cecilia Waterfall, where water flows over a broad rock face into a natural pool surrounded by moss-covered boulders. During the wetter months the waterfall is particularly impressive, while the surrounding forest remains beautiful throughout the year.
From the waterfall, the trail continues as a circular loop through the forest before returning to the Cecilia Forest trailhead.
Difficulty
The trail is rated moderate with a gradual but consistent climb through the forest. Most of the path is well maintained, although some rocky sections near the waterfall can become slippery after rain.
Reasonable fitness and hiking shoes with good grip are recommended.
Best Time to Hike
The trail is open throughout the year.
Winter and spring provide the most spectacular waterfall as rainfall increases the water flow, while summer offers cool, shaded hiking beneath the forest canopy. Morning hikes generally provide quieter conditions and comfortable temperatures.
Safety Tips
Stay on the marked trails and take extra care around wet rocks near the waterfall. Carry drinking water, wear suitable hiking footwear and avoid climbing on slippery rock surfaces.
The trail is popular and generally busy on weekends, making it suitable for solo hikers, but it is still advisable to hike with others where possible. Baboons are occasionally seen in the area, so avoid feeding or approaching wildlife.
Photography
Cecilia Waterfall is one of the most photogenic waterfalls on Table Mountain. The combination of cascading water, moss-covered rocks, indigenous forest and filtered sunlight creates excellent opportunities for nature photography.
The trail also offers occasional viewpoints across the southern suburbs and False Bay through openings in the forest.
Flora & Wildlife
The route passes through beautiful indigenous Afrotemperate forest interspersed with historic pine plantations. Ferns, mosses and seasonal wildflowers thrive in the cool, damp environment surrounding the waterfall.
Visitors commonly spot sunbirds, Cape robins, squirrels and dassies, while the streams support a rich variety of indigenous plant life.
