Overview

Located just outside Stellenbosch, about 40 minutes from Cape Town, Spier is one of South Africa’s oldest and most celebrated wine farms. Combining over 330 years of history with contemporary sustainability, award-winning wines, exceptional food and family-friendly experiences, it has become one of the Cape Winelands’ most popular destinations.

Surrounded by vineyards, ancient oak trees and rolling farmland, Spier offers a complete Winelands experience, from wine tastings and riverside relaxation to art installations and dining. It is recognised for its wines and its commitment to regenerative farming, conservation and supporting South African artists and craftspeople.

History

Spier dates back to 1692, making it one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa. Established in the early years of the Cape Colony, it has evolved through centuries of winemaking, preserving Cape Dutch heritage while embracing innovation in viticulture and hospitality.

At the heart of the farm sits the oldest dated wine cellar still in use in South Africa, a reminder of Spier’s deep winemaking roots. Throughout its history the estate has continually evolved while preserving its Cape Dutch heritage, carefully restoring its historic buildings around the werf, its original farmyard. Today Spier is recognised not only for award-winning wines but also for its leadership in regenerative farming, ethical sourcing and community development, creating a destination that blends centuries of heritage with contemporary hospitality.

Art & Sustainability

Art is woven through the Spier experience. The farm is home to one of the largest contemporary art collections in the country, with works and installations displayed across the estate and celebrated each year through events such as Spier Light Art. Alongside this cultural commitment, Spier farms regeneratively – nurturing soil health, following the natural cycles of the land and championing ethical, organic-certified practices. Together, culture, agriculture and conservation exist here in genuine harmony.

Family & Estate Experiences

Spier offers far more than wine tasting. Visitors can enjoy tastings of organic-certified wines, seasonal picnics, riverside walks, soil-to-plate dining, the Segway vineyard tour and complimentary bicycles, alongside the Cowshed Shop and its artisan gifts. A playground on the historic werf and farm activities within walking distance of the hotel make Spier especially family-friendly, while the on-site hotel and spa round out one of the Cape Winelands’ most complete destinations.
