Idiom Wine Estate
Old World European winemaking meets Cape terroir, high on the Helderberg overlooking False Bay.
Above False Bay near Somerset West, Idiom blends Old World European tradition with Cape terroir, growing 20 varieties including rare Italian cultivars. Award-winning blends, fine dining and an Eco Safari complete the visit.
Overview
Idiom Wine Estate rises above False Bay at Da Capo Vineyards near Somerset West, combining dramatic Helderberg scenery with a wine portfolio inspired by Italy, France, Spain and South Africa.
The restaurant and tasting centre frame panoramic views from Table Mountain to Cape Point, while close to twenty grape varieties allow visitors to explore an unusually broad range of regional styles in one place.
A Cape Expression of Europe
Idiom's philosophy is to interpret renowned European wine traditions through Stellenbosch fruit and Cape terroir. Flagship blends reference Bordeaux, the Rhône and Iberia, while single-varietal wines showcase Italian cultivars such as Sangiovese, Barbera and Zinfandel, also known as Primitivo.
Da Capo Vineyards
The vineyards lie on the slopes of Sir Lowry's Pass in the Helderberg, rooted in decomposed granite, Tukulu soils and Table Mountain sandstone. Mountain exposure and maritime air from False Bay support slow ripening, aromatic detail and balanced acidity.
Wine, Food & Italian Culture
The tasting centre presents flagship blends, Italian varietals and limited releases through several themed flights and food pairings. Idiom Restaurant serves contemporary Italian and South African cuisine, while the Vinotria Italian Wine Library displays wines from across Italy's major regions.
Visiting the Estate
Wine tastings are offered daily, and the restaurant serves breakfast and lunch throughout the week with dinner on Thursday and Friday. Book ahead for tastings, pairings, restaurant tables and the estate's guided safari drive, then allow time for the winding approach and expansive terrace views.
