Dornier Wine Estate
Expressive Golden Triangle wines, landmark architecture and relaxed hospitality beneath Stellenbosch Mountain.
At the foot of Stellenbosch Mountain, Dornier combines premium, minimally handled wines with a striking modern cellar, historic farmland and a relaxed Wine Lounge.
Overview
Dornier Wine Estate lies at the foot of Stellenbosch Mountain in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley. The family-owned winery brings together premium Golden Triangle wines, striking contemporary architecture and a historic farm setting.
Cool south-facing slopes, decomposed granite soils and Atlantic breezes shape elegant wines with depth and finesse. Visitors can taste in the relaxed Wine Lounge, enjoy light food and explore an estate where heritage and modern design sit side by side.
From Historic Farmland to Modern Estate
The land's recorded agricultural history dates to 1694. The present estate includes three farms in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley, with a Sir Herbert Baker-designed homestead and one of Stellenbosch's early wine cellars.
Artist Christoph Dornier began assembling the property in 1995 and released the first Dornier wine in 2002. His vision produced the estate's landmark modern cellar. The Rupert family acquired Dornier in 2020 and continues its focus on premium wine and thoughtful hospitality.
Vineyards and Terroir
Dornier's vineyards range from approximately 100 to 200 metres above sea level. Red and yellow decomposed granite, Tukulu, Oakleaf and sandstone-derived soils give the winemaking team varied sites for matching varieties and clones.
The Stellenbosch Mountain traps cooling Atlantic air, slowing ripening and helping preserve freshness. The estate farms Chenin Blanc alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Syrah.
Wine with an Individual Voice
Dornier is known for Bordeaux-style reds, expressive Chenin Blanc and distinctive small-volume varietal wines. Donatus Red brings together the five classic Bordeaux varieties, while Donatus White combines Chenin Blanc and Semillon.
The collection also includes Equanimity Cabernet Sauvignon, Moordenaarskloof Chenin Blanc, Tempranillo Reserve and the natural sweet Froschkönig Chenin Blanc.
The Wine Lounge
The Wine Lounge offers a calm, contemporary setting for tastings, wines by the glass and relaxed conversation. Curated cheese and charcuterie boards, along with light savoury dishes, are designed to accompany the estate wines.
