Bartinney Private Cellar
Mountain-grown Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon with panoramic Banhoek views and an intimate fynbos-inspired tasting experience.
Bartinney combines steep high-altitude vineyards, handcrafted Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, Cape fynbos conservation and one of Stellenbosch’s finest tasting-room views.
Overview
Bartinney Private Cellar sits high on the slopes of the Banhoek Valley beside the Helshoogte Pass. Its elevated vineyards look across a dramatic mountain amphitheatre, giving the intimate Tasting Shed one of the most memorable outlooks in Stellenbosch.
The boutique estate focuses on Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, including small-batch flagship wines selected from its oldest and strongest blocks. A tasting can be paired with local snacks or the estate's fynbos-inspired experience.
Wine Made on a Mountain
Steep slopes, altitude and cooling air shape Bartinney's mountain-grown style. Each vine is tended by hand, and grapes are picked in stages so that individual blocks can be harvested at the point that best suits their balance and flavour.
In the cellar, small selections are matured and blended with an emphasis on clarity, structure and the character of the high Banhoek sites.
Conservation and Fynbos
Bartinney has long connected winegrowing with the restoration of the Cape floral kingdom. Indigenous mountain fynbos surrounds the vineyards, and the farm supports broader conservation work within the Banhoek landscape.
The Fynbos and Wine Experience brings that relationship into the tasting room by pairing estate wines with carefully selected aromatic elements from the local environment.
The Estate and Flagship Ranges
The estate range includes wooded Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Élevage and a fresh unoaked Just Chardonnay. Hourglass Chardonnay comes from a small barrel selection linked to the farm's oldest Chardonnay block, planted in 1990.
Skyfall Cabernet Sauvignon is the red flagship, created in small quantities from hand-selected high-altitude blocks. Together, Hourglass and Skyfall show the depth and maturity of Bartinney's mountain vineyards.
The Tasting Shed
The Tasting Shed is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, including normal public-holiday hours outside its festive closure. Experiences include the Estate Tasting, Fynbos and Wine Experience and selected sparkling-wine tastings.
There is no full restaurant at the estate, but biltong, droëwors, olives and snack platters are available. Booking is recommended for groups and special experiences.
