Alto Wine Estate
A century-old Helderberg estate renowned for Alto Rouge, Cabernet Sauvignon and classically structured red wines.
Alto pairs more than a century of red-wine heritage with Cabernet-led blends, warm Helderberg slopes and tastings and dining at its temporary Klein Alto home.
Overview
Alto Wine Estate is set on the warm northern slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch's celebrated Golden Triangle. For more than a century, the estate has built its reputation around structured, age-worthy red wines led by Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and the iconic Alto Rouge.
While the historic estate undergoes extensive renovations, Alto's tasting room and restaurant operate from Klein Alto at nearby Bonte Rivier Vineyards. Visitors can still explore the estate's red-wine heritage through guided tastings, pairings and relaxed dining with Helderberg views.
History
Alto's modern story spans more than 100 years and an unusually small succession of winemakers. This continuity helped establish a recognisable house style centred on powerful fruit, firm structure and the ability to mature.
Alto Rouge was first made in 1922 and later became a South African classic. Cabernet Sauvignon joined the range as a single-cultivar wine in 1965 and remains one of the estate's most decorated releases.
The Golden Triangle
The vineyards rise from roughly 100 to 500 metres above sea level on decomposed granite and clay soils. Generous afternoon sunlight develops concentration and colour, while maritime breezes from False Bay slow ripening and help retain freshness.
More than half of the estate is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. Shiraz and Cabernet Franc add depth and aromatic lift to the blends, allowing individual vineyard parcels to contribute to Alto's layered red-wine style.
Wine Tasting at Klein Alto
The temporary Klein Alto tasting room is around 100 metres from the historic estate on Annandale Road. Tastings run from Tuesday to Sunday, with the final tasting beginning at 16:00.
Experiences may include the core Alto range and food pairings such as biltong or smoked cheese. Booking is advised, particularly for pairings and weekend visits.
Klein Alto Restaurant
The restaurant serves locally sourced, Italian-influenced dishes designed to accompany Alto's wines. Guests can dine in a restored historic cellar, the atrium or on the outdoor deck overlooking the Helderberg.
