Cape Town Life Style
Spas in the Cape Winelands
An hour out of Cape Town the spas stop being rooms inside hotels and start being reasons to make the drive. Most of them sit on working wine farms, several take day visitors who are not staying the night, and a few are not spas in the ordinary sense at all.
These are the fifteen in our records, grouped by the kind of visit rather than by town. Each entry says where it is, what the facilities actually are, and whether you can book as a day visitor.
On a wine estate
Eight spas that share their address with a vineyard. The estate is usually the reason you are already there, and in most cases the spa will take a booking from somebody who is not staying the night. Between them they cover Stellenbosch, the Helshoogte pass, Simondium, the Bottelary hills, Faure and Franschhoek.
Four suites and a pool facing Table Mountain
Delaire Graff Spa
Estate spa · Helshoogte, Stellenbosch

On the Helshoogte pass, with four treatment suites, three of them opening onto private courtyards, and a twenty-two metre infinity pool facing Table Mountain.
Treatments use Augustinus Bader, Irene Forte and the estate’s own Jardin de Delaire range. Non-residents can book treatments and day visits.
Eight rooms and a full set of water facilities
Lanzerac Spa
Estate spa · Jonkershoek Valley

In the Jonkershoek Valley outside Stellenbosch, with eight therapy rooms and a set of water and heat facilities that runs to a heated indoor pool, a mist room and Rasul rituals.
It is the largest room count of any spa in this guide, which matters if you are booking for more than two people.
A private bathing ritual in a herbal bath house
Spier Spa
Estate spa · Stellenbosch

On Spier Wine Farm, built around a private bathing ritual in its Cape Herbal Bath House, with ten treatment rooms, heat and cold facilities, a movement studio and a garden pool.
Day visitors are welcome alongside hotel guests, and the bath house is the thing to book rather than a standard massage.
A bamboo pavilion inside the farm garden
Babylonstoren Garden Spa
Estate spa · Simondium

The spa at Babylonstoren stands in a bamboo forest inside the farm garden, in a pavilion built of bamboo that holds a hammam, a chill room, a hot spa and a gym.
It is the most unusual setting of any spa in this guide, and the garden is the reason most people are on the farm in the first place.
Day visitors as well as hotel guests
Vergenoegd Löw Spa
Estate spa · Faure

On the Vergenoegd Löw wine estate between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, taking day visitors as well as hotel guests.
The treatment list runs from facials and massage through to body wraps, milk baths and scalp work, which is broader than most of the estate spas on this list.
A hammam room in the Bottelary hills
Hazendal Spa
Estate spa · Bottelary

The spa at Hazendal Wine Estate on Bottelary Road, with a hammam room, single and couple treatment rooms, and a nail studio.
The Bottelary hills sit between Stellenbosch and the northern suburbs, which makes this one of the easier Winelands spas to reach from the city without a full day set aside.
A plunge pool set over a lily pond
Leeu Spa by Healing Earth
Estate spa · Franschhoek

Four treatment rooms on a Franschhoek wine estate, with an infrared sauna, a steam room and a plunge pool set over a lily pond.
Small by the standards of the Stellenbosch estates, and the setting is the point rather than the room count.
Two rooms and a hammam above the village
Mont Rochelle Spa
Hotel and vineyard spa · Franschhoek

A small spa at the Mont Rochelle hotel and vineyard above Franschhoek, open daily to day visitors as well as hotel guests.
Two treatment rooms and a hammam. It is the smallest on this list, and it is here because it takes day bookings in a village where most spas do not.
Retreats and programmes
Three places that do not sell single treatments in the ordinary way. Two are residential retreats that also run a day option, and one is a medical practice that happens to have spa facilities. Read what each actually offers before booking, because none of them is a walk-in massage.
Booked programmes, with a day option
The Hydro at Stellenbosch
Residential retreat · Stellenbosch

A residential health and wellness retreat on the slopes above Stellenbosch. It works in booked programmes rather than single treatments.
There is a day programme for visitors who are not staying, which is the route in if you want to see the place without committing to a residential stay.
The most extensive water facilities in the region
Santé Wellness Retreat & Spa
Wellness retreat · Cape Winelands

A wellness retreat built around day and half-day spa journeys alongside longer programmes covering fitness, nutrition and bio-energy work.
The hydrothermal facilities are unusually extensive for the region: hammam, rasul, hydrotherapy and vinotherapy baths, hot and cold plunge pools, Kneipp therapy, steam rooms and saunas, an indoor heated pool and a Jacuzzi.
Clinical work rather than a spa visit
Terre Paisible Medical Rejuvenation & Spa
Medical practice · Franschhoek

A medical rejuvenation and aesthetics practice outside Franschhoek that also offers spa treatments. The proposition is clinical work and longevity testing rather than a conventional spa visit.
The medical side runs to injectables, platelet rich plasma and Ultherapy, with laser, microneedling and radiofrequency treatments alongside, and genetic, hormone and gut health testing. There is a sauna and a swimming pool on the property.
Hotel and farm spas
Two that are neither on a vineyard nor running programmes. One is a new destination spa attached to a Somerset West hotel, the other sits on a farm in a valley an hour and a half out, and both are worth the detour for different reasons.
A lap pool, a gym and a yoga studio alongside
Erinvale Spa
Hotel spa · Somerset West

The Helderberg’s first destination spa, opened at the end of 2024, with four treatment rooms, a twenty-five metre lap pool, a gym and a yoga studio.
The pool and the gym are the difference here. Most spas on this list give you a plunge pool; this one gives you somewhere to swim lengths and train before the treatment.
A farm between the Waaihoek and Slanghoek mountains
Die Stalle Spa at BOSJES
Farm spa · Breedekloof

The spa at BOSJES, a farm in the Breedekloof Valley framed by the Waaihoek and Slanghoek mountains. The spa menu runs to massage and body treatments.
This is the furthest of the vineyard-country spas from Cape Town and the setting is the whole argument for the drive.
Heat, cold and mineral water
Two that sell water rather than treatments. One is a sauna and cold plunge operation on a wine estate, the other is a hot spring resort a long way further east. Neither is a spa in the treatment-room sense, and both take day visitors.
Single sessions, no membership
Fjord Plunge at Lourensford
Sauna and cold plunge · Somerset West

A sauna and cold plunge operation on Lourensford Wine Estate outside Somerset West. The sauna runs hot and the plunge pool cold, with an infrared studio for movement classes and guided breathwork alongside.
Single sessions are available without a membership, which makes it the most straightforward booking in this guide.
Nine natural mineral pools, and a long drive
Avalon Springs
Hot spring resort · Montagu

A hot spring resort in Montagu built around natural mineral pools, open to day visitors as well as overnight guests. Nine hot spring pools including children’s pools, an indoor pool, a waterslide and water sprayers. A small wellness spa on the property handles massage and beauty treatments.
Montagu is considerably further out than anywhere else in this guide, so treat it as a destination in its own right rather than a Winelands afternoon. Day visitors are admitted to a dedicated area and advance reservation is required.
Practical notes
Day visitors. Most of the estate spas here take bookings from people who are not staying the night, and the entries say so where the record does. The retreats work differently: they sell programmes, and the day option is a programme rather than a treatment.
Booking ahead. Treatment rooms are the constraint. Several of these spas have two, four or eight rooms in total, so a Saturday afternoon for two people is not a walk-in proposition anywhere on this list.
Distances. Stellenbosch, the Bottelary hills and Faure are inside an hour of the city. Franschhoek and Simondium are further. Breedekloof is further again, and Montagu is a different kind of trip altogether.
Driving. Every place in this guide needs a car, and most of them sit on a wine farm. If the day includes a tasting, work out who is driving before you book the treatment.
What is not a spa. Two entries here are deliberately not treatment-room spas. Fjord Plunge sells sauna and cold water; Avalon Springs sells mineral pools. Terre Paisible is a medical practice. Read those three entries before assuming.
Choosing one
If you are already going to a wine farm, book the spa on that farm. If the spa is the reason for the day, Lanzerac and Spier have the most room to spend an afternoon in, and Santé has the most water. If you want an hour and not a day, Fjord Plunge at Lourensford or Mont Rochelle in Franschhoek. And if you are staying in the city and want somewhere closer, our wider Cape Town guide covers the hotel spas, the treatment rooms in Constantia and the sauna circuit on the beach.

Eight of the fifteen share an address with a working wine farm, and those estates have pages of their own in our wine collection. The other seven do not, so the collection sits alongside this guide rather than indexing it. If you are out here to eat rather than to book a treatment, the Stellenbosch restaurants are covered separately. And several of these estates have rooms as well as treatment rooms, so a spa day can become a night on the farm.

Two of the fifteen are over on the Helderberg, around Somerset West, and the wine farms on that side have a guide of their own.
