Helderberg Farm’s Black Section is the most demanding route in the farm’s colour-graded MTB network. Over 12 km it packs in around 600 m of climbing, giving the ride a steep, concentrated character on the foothills above Somerset West.
The wider trail network is part of the appeal. Green, Blue and Red options leave from the same trailhead, so riders of different ability levels can choose separate routes without splitting across different venues. That makes Helderberg particularly useful for families or groups who want to ride at different levels on the same visit.
The trail network
Helderberg Farm publishes a colour-graded MTB network from one trailhead, progressing from a 2 km Green route and 3 km Blue to a 10 km Red and the 12 km Black Section. Two marked downhill runs also form part of the riding network.
The Black Section sits at the top of that progression and is intended for experienced riders. The farm publishes a climbing figure for the Black route, while comparable ascent figures are not published for the shorter colour-graded routes.
Access and permits
Day permits are sold at the Tea Garden and apply during the farm’s published riding hours. Annual access is handled separately through the Winelands Cycling Club. Riders should remain on the designated cycling trails and follow the farm’s current access rules.
Why distances differ
Different sources publish different distances for Helderberg’s Black route. CapeCurated uses the 12 km figure currently published by Helderberg Farm itself. Older or community listings may describe differently composed loops, which is why larger figures can still appear elsewhere.
