Bovenland Red starts and finishes at Spice Route Destination and runs for 12 km through the Bovenland section of the Paarl Trails network. With 320 m of climbing, it combines vineyard terrain with purpose-built riding and open views across the Paarl valley.
Despite the name, Red is the route identity rather than its technical grade. Paarl Trails grades Bovenland Red Blue / Moderate, giving riders a much more useful indication of the difficulty than the route name alone.
Route description
The route runs through the Bovenland section of the Paarl Trails network, mixing vineyard riding with built trail sections before returning to Spice Route Destination. The terrain changes throughout the ride rather than following one continuous style of trail, with the climbing distributed across the circular route.
Technical difficulty
Paarl Trails grades Bovenland Red Blue for technical difficulty, which CapeCurated normalises as Intermediate in the facts above. Expect built MTB trail and vineyard terrain rather than treating the Red in the route name as a difficulty rating.
Fitness and climbing
Paarl Trails rates the route Moderate physically. With 320 m of climbing over the circular route, it requires a reasonable level of fitness without being one of the network’s biggest climbing days.
Best time to ride
Earlier starts are generally more comfortable in hot weather because Paarl can become very warm during summer. In wetter conditions, check the current Paarl Trails network status before travelling.
