The ABC Trail is Muratie’s beginner Green route, starting at the Dirtopia Trail Centre on Muratie Wine Estate and running through the Simonsberg trail system to Gilloolys.
The operator publishes it as three connected sections. A runs 3.7 km from the Muratie trailhead to Gilloolys, C returns 2.7 km, and B is an optional 1.8 km forest loop. Ride A + C for 6.4 km, or include B for an 8.2 km configuration.
Choose the configuration
A + C — 6.4 km: follow A for 3.7 km to Gilloolys, then return on the 2.7 km C section.
A + B + C — 8.2 km: add the optional 1.8 km B forest loop between the outward and return sections.
Dirtopia also identifies three blue-rated intermediate alternatives on section A: Methuselah (1.3 km), Valhalla (0.7 km) and Nebukadnezzar (1.7 km). These optional lines increase the distance to Gilloolys.
Access and permits
A valid permit is required. Current MTB day permits are R100 per person and are available from the Dirtopia Trail Centre or online; Muratie also states that permits are available from its tasting room. Winelands Regional permits are accepted at Muratie, and an indemnity form must be completed.
Dirtopia describes the trails as open seven days a week, but asks visitors to confirm current Trail Centre opening hours before travelling.
Finding the trailhead
Start at the Dirtopia Trail Centre at Muratie Wine Estate on Knorhoek Road, off the R44 near Stellenbosch. Follow the marked Green ABC route from the trailhead.
