The middle of Robberg’s three circular routes, and the one that shows you the peninsula properly without committing the whole morning. CapeNature gives it as 5.5 kilometres and about two hours.
The trail runs along the northern ridge of the peninsula and out onto the wind-shadow of the climbing-falling dune — Witsand, the white sand that gives the route its name. It then drops to the tombolo, the sand bridge linking the peninsula to the small island at its western end, and follows the boardwalk across.
The wildlife is the reason to take this one over the Gap. The path passes above the resident seal colony, close enough to hear it, and finishes past a colony of kelp gulls.
CapeNature does not publish a difficulty grading for this route, only that the three circuits increase in difficulty and distance. The reserve asks visitors on every Robberg trail not to stand near the cliffs when the wind is strong, and it does not permit sandboarding or running down the dune.
