Swartkopberg is the mountain directly behind Simon’s Town, and it falls inside Table Mountain National Park. SANParks manages it as one of the park’s more remote sections, an area kept deliberately undeveloped, reached on foot, with hiking as an accepted use. That is the character of the walk: a real mountain above a small naval town, without a car park, a kiosk or a signboard at the top.
The way up leaves the top edge of the suburb. Park on Jan Smuts Drive near the Churchill Avenue corner, where a dirt track climbs away from the road, and follow it up through fynbos to the blockhouses standing on the nek. From there the path continues to the summit, and the views open out over False Bay, the harbour and the ridges running south towards Cape Point. You come back down the same way.
One thing is worth knowing before you go: some routes over this mountain carry on towards Smitswinkel on the far side. That is a longer outing with a different access situation, and it is not the walk described here. Go up with water, proper shoes, a warm layer and enough daylight, and turn back when it makes sense to.
