Overview

The Kasteelspoort Trail to Diving Board is one of the most scenic hikes on Table Mountain, taking hikers up the western slopes of the Twelve Apostles to one of Cape Town’s most iconic viewpoints. The route combines panoramic ocean views, rugged mountain scenery and fascinating historical remnants before reaching the famous Diving Board, a dramatic rock ledge perched above the cliffs.

Starting above Camps Bay, the trail climbs steadily through Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos before ascending the historic Kasteelspoort ravine. At the top, hikers are rewarded with spectacular views across Camps Bay, Lion’s Head, the Atlantic Ocean and the Twelve Apostles. The Diving Board, a natural rock outcrop near the remains of the original cableway infrastructure, has become one of Table Mountain’s most photographed landmarks.

Trail Description

The hike begins from the Theresa Avenue trailhead above Camps Bay before following a short jeep track to the Pipe Track. After turning onto the Kasteelspoort Trail, the route climbs steadily through rocky terrain and indigenous fynbos, with increasingly impressive views over the Atlantic coastline.

The steepest section is the ascent through Kasteelspoort itself, where stone steps and rocky paths lead onto the Back Table. Once on the plateau, the trail continues a short distance to the famous Diving Board, a spectacular rock formation projecting over the mountain’s western edge. Nearby are remnants of the original Table Mountain cableway used during the construction of the mountain reservoirs in the late 1800s.

Difficulty

The hike is rated Moderate and is suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.

Although the climb is continuous, the trail is well established and does not involve technical scrambling. The final ascent through Kasteelspoort is the most demanding section, but the effort is rewarded with exceptional views.

Best Time to Hike

The trail can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable hiking temperatures, while early morning hikes during summer avoid the afternoon heat. Winter often delivers outstanding visibility after cold fronts, although hikers should be prepared for rapidly changing weather on the mountain.

Safety Tips

Carry at least two litres of water, wear hiking shoes with good grip and check the weather forecast before starting. Stay on the marked trail and avoid standing on the edge of the Diving Board, particularly during strong winds.

As with all Table Mountain hikes, avoid leaving valuables visible in your vehicle and hike with a companion whenever possible.

Photography

The Kasteelspoort Trail offers some of the finest coastal views on Table Mountain. Throughout the climb, photographers can capture Camps Bay, the Twelve Apostles, Lion’s Head and the Atlantic Ocean.

The Diving Board itself is one of Cape Town’s most recognisable photography locations, while the surrounding plateau provides beautiful landscape compositions throughout the day.

Flora & Wildlife

The route passes through pristine Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos, home to proteas, ericas and restios. During spring, colourful wildflowers blanket the mountainside.

Dassies are commonly seen among the rocks, while Cape sugarbirds, sunbirds and birds of prey are regularly spotted overhead.
