Overview

Elephant’s Eye Cave is one of the most popular family-friendly hikes in the Silvermine section of Table Mountain National Park. The trail leads to a large sandstone cave carved into the mountainside, where hikers are rewarded with spectacular views over Tokai, False Bay, Muizenberg and the southern suburbs of Cape Town.

Named for its distinctive elephant-eye shape when viewed from a distance, the cave has become a favourite destination for picnics, photography and relaxed day hikes. The well-maintained paths, gentle gradients and beautiful fynbos scenery make it an excellent choice for beginners, families and anyone looking for a rewarding half-day adventure.

Trail Description

The hike begins at the Silvermine Gate 1 parking area before following wide gravel roads and well-marked footpaths through the Silvermine Nature Reserve. The route climbs gradually through indigenous fynbos with only a few steeper sections near the end.

As the trail approaches the mountainside, the impressive Elephant’s Eye Cave comes into view. The spacious cave provides welcome shade and offers sweeping views across Tokai Forest, Muizenberg, False Bay and the Cape Flats. Many hikers enjoy a picnic before returning along the same route.

On warmer days, the nearby Silvermine Reservoir provides the perfect place for a refreshing swim after the hike.

Difficulty

Elephant’s Eye Cave is rated Moderate and is suitable for hikers of most fitness levels.

The trail follows good-quality paths with only a short, steeper climb approaching the cave. It is one of the most beginner-friendly hikes in Table Mountain National Park while still providing rewarding mountain scenery.

Best Time to Hike

The trail can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Spring brings colourful wildflowers throughout the reserve, while autumn offers comfortable hiking temperatures and excellent visibility. Summer mornings are ideal before the day becomes hot, and many hikers finish the outing with a swim in Silvermine Reservoir.

Winter often provides beautiful clear views after passing cold fronts, although weather conditions can change quickly.

Safety Tips

Carry drinking water, sunscreen and comfortable hiking shoes with good grip. Although the trail is well marked and frequently used, always stay on the designated paths.

Photography

The cave itself is one of Cape Town’s most photographed hiking destinations. From its entrance, photographers enjoy panoramic views across Tokai, Muizenberg, False Bay and the surrounding mountains.

The surrounding fynbos is particularly colourful during spring, while the cave provides dramatic natural framing for landscape photography.

Flora & Wildlife

The trail passes through Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos, one of the world’s richest floral ecosystems. Proteas, ericas and restios dominate the landscape, with seasonal wildflowers adding vibrant colour during spring.
