Overview

The Boesmanskloof Trail is the old footpath over the Riviersonderend mountains between Greyton and McGregor, and it remains one of the best day crossings in the Western Cape. CapeNature manages it from Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve and gives the distance as 14 km one way, at six to seven hours. It can be walked from either end. Greyton to Die Galg and Die Galg to Greyton are sold as separate bookings, so pick your direction when you book.

From the Greyton side the path leaves just outside the village and the first 6 km is a jeep track climbing to the view point, after which it becomes a proper mountain path. Roughly halfway you reach Oakes Falls, a run of waterfalls and pools that is the reason most people stop for lunch exactly there. From the McGregor side the trail begins at Die Galg, which is not McGregor itself but a point about 14 km south of the town, so transport has to be arranged either way.

Two things to plan around. There is no camping permitted on the trail, so you sleep in Greyton, in McGregor, or in the private accommodation at Die Galg, and that accommodation is booked separately from the hiking permit. And this is a crossing, not a circuit: whichever end you start from, you finish somewhere you did not park. Sort the lift out before you leave, not at four in the afternoon on the far side of a mountain.

CapeNature also lists a two-day version at 28 km. That is the same 14 km path walked out and back, not a different route.

  • Booked through CapeNature, no camping on the trail.
