Dorp Street is the second-oldest road in South Africa and its entire length is declared a national monument. Built up from 1710 as the wagon road to the Cape, it holds one of the longest surviving rows of old buildings of any major town in southern Africa, running from Cape Dutch through Georgian to Victorian under mature oaks. Museums, galleries, bookshops, delis and restaurants occupy the ground floors alongside private homes.
