A miniature railway park on the R304 outside Stellenbosch, where scaled steam locomotives pull open carriages around a circuit through the grounds. Bring a picnic and make an afternoon of it.
The locomotives here are the real thing in miniature, coal-fired and built by hand, and they pull open carriages that adults and children ride together. The circuit runs through the grounds and across a red steel bridge over water, one of the park’s most distinctive features.
It is an outdoor park rather than a single ride. There are lawns and picnic areas, and dogs are welcome, so it works as a place to settle for an afternoon rather than ride once and leave. Children’s parties are hosted on site.
Winelands Light Railway sits on the R304 at Koelenhof and is run by The Train Park, which also operates the Century City Tramway and the Blue Train Park at Mouille Point. The engines and rolling stock are made in the group’s own workshop in Stellenbosch.
