Skeleton Gorge is one of the most iconic and rewarding hikes on Table Mountain, taking hikers from the lush gardens of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden to the top of the mountain through a dramatic indigenous ravine. Known for its dense forest, wooden ladders, flowing streams and steep ascent, the trail offers a completely different experience from the more exposed routes on the front face of Table Mountain.
Beginning beneath the towering trees of Kirstenbosch, the route follows Skeleton Gorge through cool Afrotemperate forest before climbing alongside mountain streams and waterfalls. Higher up, the trail emerges onto the Table Mountain plateau near Maclear’s Beacon and the Hely-Hutchinson Reservoir, where hikers are rewarded with spectacular views across Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula.
Although physically demanding, Skeleton Gorge is widely regarded as one of Cape Town’s finest hikes thanks to its incredible scenery, changing landscapes and sense of adventure.
Trail Map
Trail Description
The hike begins inside Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, following well-marked paths through indigenous forest before entering Skeleton Gorge. The lower section climbs steadily beneath a dense canopy of trees, crossing streams and rocky sections as the ravine narrows.
Several wooden ladders assist hikers over steeper rock faces before the route continues through cool forest alongside cascading water. As the trail reaches the top of the gorge, the landscape opens onto the Table Mountain plateau, where hikers can continue to Maclear’s Beacon, the Hely-Hutchinson Reservoir or return via an alternative route such as Nursery Ravine.
The dramatic change from forest to mountain plateau makes Skeleton Gorge one of the most diverse hiking experiences on Table Mountain.
Difficulty
Skeleton Gorge is rated Difficult due to its continuous ascent, steep rocky sections and significant elevation gain.
Good fitness is essential, and hikers should be comfortable climbing ladders and uneven terrain. The trail can become slippery after rain.
Best Time to Hike
The trail can be hiked throughout the year, although spring and autumn generally provide the most comfortable temperatures.
Summer offers cool shade within the forest, while winter brings stronger waterfalls but also wetter and more slippery conditions. An early morning start is recommended to avoid afternoon cloud and changing mountain weather.
Safety Tips
Carry plenty of water, wear hiking shoes with good grip and prepare for rapidly changing weather on the summit. Check the forecast before setting out and avoid hiking during storms or strong winds.
Because the route is long and physically demanding, hiking with a companion is recommended. Allow enough time for the return journey or plan an alternative descent in advance.
Photography
Skeleton Gorge offers outstanding photographic opportunities throughout the hike. The lower forest features towering trees, waterfalls, moss-covered rocks and wooden ladders, while the summit provides sweeping views across Cape Town, False Bay and the surrounding mountains.
Morning light filtering through the forest creates particularly beautiful photography conditions.
Flora & Wildlife
The route passes through one of the finest examples of indigenous Afrotemperate forest on Table Mountain before reaching the unique fynbos vegetation of the mountain plateau.
Birdlife includes Cape batis, sunbirds and Cape robins, while dassies are commonly seen near the summit. Ferns, mosses and seasonal wildflowers thrive in the cool, damp environment of the gorge.
