Tranquility Cracks via Corridor Ravine is one of Table Mountain’s most adventurous hikes, combining a challenging ascent with one of the mountain’s most fascinating natural formations. Hidden high above Camps Bay, the Tranquility Cracks are a maze of enormous sandstone boulders, narrow passageways and quiet chambers that feel worlds away from the busy city below.
The route begins on the western slopes of Table Mountain before climbing steadily through Corridor Ravine, a rugged mountain valley that offers spectacular views over Camps Bay, Lion’s Head and the Atlantic Ocean. As hikers reach the plateau, the landscape changes dramatically, revealing the remarkable rock formations that make Tranquility Cracks one of Cape Town’s true hidden gems.
Although less well known than Platteklip Gorge or Skeleton Gorge, this hike rewards experienced hikers with quieter trails, unique scenery and unforgettable viewpoints across the Twelve Apostles and the city below.
Trail Map
Trail Description
The hike starts from the Pipe Track trailhead above Camps Bay and follows a gradual climb before entering Corridor Ravine. The route becomes steeper as it ascends over rocky terrain, with sections requiring careful footing and a steady pace.
After reaching the upper mountain plateau, the trail leads towards the famous Tranquility Cracks. Here, enormous sandstone slabs have naturally split apart, creating narrow corridors, hidden chambers and fascinating rock formations that invite exploration.
After exploring the cracks, the loop continues across the Table Mountain plateau before descending back towards the starting point, providing constantly changing scenery throughout the hike.
Difficulty
This is a hard hike suitable for experienced hikers with a good level of fitness.
The ascent through Corridor Ravine is steep in places and includes uneven rocky terrain. While no technical climbing is required, hikers should be comfortable on mountain trails and prepared for a sustained climb.
Best Time to Hike
The route can be enjoyed throughout the year, although spring and autumn usually provide the most comfortable hiking conditions.
Early morning offers cooler temperatures and calmer weather, while winter often provides excellent visibility after cold fronts have passed. Avoid hiking during strong winds or poor weather, as conditions on the plateau can change rapidly.
Safety Tips
Carry plenty of drinking water, wear hiking shoes with good grip and always check the weather forecast before starting. The upper plateau can become cold and windy even when conditions are warm at sea level.
Stay on established paths around the Tranquility Cracks and avoid climbing onto unstable rock formations. Hiking with a companion is recommended.
Photography
This hike offers some of the most unique photography opportunities on Table Mountain. The massive sandstone formations of the Tranquility Cracks create dramatic compositions, while the surrounding viewpoints overlook Camps Bay, Lion’s Head, the Atlantic Ocean and the Twelve Apostles.
Morning and late afternoon light provide the best conditions for landscape photography.
Flora & Wildlife
The route passes through beautiful Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos, one of the richest floral ecosystems in the world. Seasonal wildflowers bloom across the slopes during spring, while proteas, ericas and restios dominate the landscape.
Dassies are frequently seen among the rocks, and hikers may also spot sunbirds, Cape sugarbirds and soaring Verreaux’s eagles.
