The India Venster to Upper Cable Station hike climbs the front face of Table Mountain and involves sections of real climbing rather than walking. It is considerably harder than Platteklip Gorge, and the Cableway asks that it be left to experienced hikers.
Starting near the Lower Cableway Station, the route winds its way across the front face of Table Mountain, passing beneath towering cliffs before climbing through rocky gullies on the steeper sections. The trail finishes at the Upper Cable Station, making it the perfect route for hikers who want to enjoy a challenging ascent before taking the cable car back down.
Trail Map
Trail Description
The hike begins near the Lower Table Mountain Aerial Cableway before joining the India Venster route. The lower section climbs steadily on rocky paths with increasingly impressive views over Cape Town, Lion’s Head and Table Bay.
Higher up, the trail becomes considerably more adventurous as hikers negotiate several sections where climbing is involved. These are not technical climbs, but they need above average fitness, confidence with heights and sure footing.
After the climbing ends, the route joins easier mountain paths leading across the upper slopes before finishing at the Upper Cable Station, where hikers can relax, enjoy the viewpoints or descend by cable car.
Difficulty
India Venster needs above average fitness and experience on mountain terrain.
Although ropes are not required, the route includes sections that need the use of both hands. It is not suitable for people who are uncomfortable with heights.
Best Time to Hike
The trail can be hiked throughout the year.
Early morning provides the coolest conditions and the best chance of avoiding crowds. Spring and autumn generally offer the most comfortable hiking weather, while summer afternoons can become extremely hot on the exposed rock.
Avoid attempting the route in rain, strong wind or poor visibility, as those sections become significantly more difficult.
Safety Tips
Carry plenty of drinking water and wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Follow the yellow route markers carefully, particularly through the climbing sections.
Because of the terrain, India Venster should only be climbed in good weather. Descending this route is not recommended for most hikers; the cable car or Platteklip Gorge are safer descent options.
Photography
India Venster offers some of the finest viewpoints on Table Mountain. Throughout the ascent, hikers enjoy spectacular views over Cape Town, Signal Hill, Lion’s Head, Camps Bay and Table Bay.
The dramatic cliff sections and sweeping mountain scenery make this one of the most photogenic hiking routes on the mountain.
Flora & Wildlife
The trail passes through Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos, part of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Proteas, ericas and restios cover the mountainside, while dassies are commonly seen resting on rocky ledges.
Birdlife includes Cape sugarbirds, sunbirds and birds of prey soaring above the cliffs.
