Platteklip Gorge is the most direct and historic route to the summit of Table Mountain. Used for centuries as one of the primary access routes to the mountain, this challenging trail climbs steeply through a dramatic gorge before reaching the flat summit plateau near the Upper Cable Station.
Although the route is physically demanding, it requires no technical scrambling, making it the most popular ascent for hikers who want to experience Table Mountain on foot. The combination of spectacular scenery, rich history and convenient cable car access for the descent has made Platteklip Gorge one of South Africa’s most iconic hikes.
Trail Map
Trail Description
The hike begins at the Platteklip Gorge trailhead on Tafelberg Road, a short distance from the Lower Cableway Station. After crossing a small bridge, the path immediately begins climbing through the narrow gorge on a well-built stone staircase.
The ascent is continuous, with hundreds of stone steps winding between towering sandstone cliffs. As elevation is gained, the views over Cape Town, Table Bay and Lion’s Head become increasingly impressive.
After reaching the top of the gorge, the trail levels out on the Table Mountain plateau. From here, it is an easy walk to the Upper Cable Station, Maclear’s Beacon or the various viewpoints across the summit.
Difficulty
Platteklip Gorge is rated Hard because of its steep and relentless climb.
Although the trail does not involve scrambling or technical climbing, the continuous ascent gains more than 650 metres in a relatively short distance. A reasonable level of fitness is essential, particularly during the warmer months.
Best Time to Hike
The trail can be hiked throughout the year.
Early morning is the best time to begin, especially during summer when the gorge becomes hot by late morning. Spring and autumn generally offer the most comfortable temperatures, while winter often provides excellent visibility after passing cold fronts. Always avoid hiking during strong winds, heavy rain or when cloud covers the summit.
Safety Tips
Carry at least two litres of water, wear hiking shoes with good grip and check the weather forecast before starting. Pace yourself, particularly during the steep middle section, and take regular breaks.
Stay on the marked trail and avoid attempting shortcuts across loose rocks. If weather conditions deteriorate on the summit, descend promptly or use the cable car if it is operating.
Photography
Platteklip Gorge provides dramatic views framed by towering sandstone cliffs. As you climb higher, the panorama opens to reveal Cape Town, Signal Hill, Lion’s Head, Table Bay and the surrounding coastline.
The upper section offers excellent opportunities for landscape photography, while the summit provides countless viewpoints across both the city and the Cape Peninsula.
Flora & Wildlife
The trail passes through Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos, one of the world’s richest floral ecosystems. Proteas, ericas and restios thrive along the mountainside, while spring brings colourful displays of indigenous wildflowers.
Dassies are commonly seen among the rocks, and hikers may spot Cape sugarbirds, sunbirds and birds of prey soaring above the cliffs.
