Cape Town’s indoor climbing gyms take walk-ins on a day pass. Between them you get bouldering, top rope, lead and auto-belay walls, with shoes and harnesses to rent.
Indoor climbing splits two ways. Bouldering is short, hard problems a few metres off the ground over thick matting, with no rope and no partner needed. Roped climbing goes higher and needs either someone to belay you or an auto-belay to do it for you.
Cape Town has both, in converted warehouse space in Paarden Eiland and Diep River: high walls, bouldering floors, training areas, cafes and gear to rent. Routes are reset regularly, so the walls change even if you go often.
You pay a day pass and climb. No booking, no membership and no experience needed, and a first-timer can be on the wall within ten minutes of walking in. It is also the obvious answer on the day the mountain is closed in.
