Birdwatching

Rocherpan Nature Reserve

A seasonal coastal vlei north of Velddrif with three bird hides and 183 species on the list.

Rocherpan is the West Coast reserve built for birdwatching rather than one that happens to have birds. CapeNature record 183 species here, about 70 of them water birds, and there are three hides, two on the south western side of the vlei and one on the north western side. The honest caveat comes from CapeNature themselves: the birding depends on how much water is in the pans, and it is not guaranteed. The pan fills in winter and dries through the summer. The reserve sits 25 kilometres north of Velddrif on the coastal road, and the eight self-catering cabins are named after the birds you come to see.
