Zorgvliet Wine Estate
Cool-climate Bordeaux wines, historic Cape Dutch hospitality and mountain dining in the Banghoek Valley.
Zorgvliet pairs elegant Banghoek wines with a restored 1692 manor house, restaurants, family picnics, panoramic mountain scenery and a country lodge.
Overview
Zorgvliet Wine Estate sits in the dramatic Banghoek Valley, seven kilometres outside Stellenbosch, surrounded by vineyards and the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains.
The historic estate combines cool-climate Bordeaux varieties with a restored Cape Dutch manor house, several dining options, family-friendly picnics and a country lodge.
History
The manor house dates to 1692 and now contains the wine-tasting room. After the farm changed hands in 2002, the building was carefully restored, including its historic ceilings and thatched facade.
The wider valley was once called De Bange Hoek, meaning the scared corner, a reference to the steep terrain and dangers faced by early travellers. Today Banghoek is a recognised Stellenbosch wine ward prized for its high-elevation vineyards and mountain climate.
Mountain-Grown Wines
Zorgvliet specialises in restrained Bordeaux varieties shaped by the cool Banghoek Valley. Cabernet Franc is a particular strength, joined by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
The flagship Richelle is a Bordeaux-style red blend built for finesse and depth. Simoné brings together Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon in a textured white blend that reflects the valley's cool slopes.
Wine Tasting
Tastings take place in the historic Herenhuis and include flagship, Bordeaux white, Bordeaux red, sparkling and shorter Wine Tram options. Chocolate and macaron pairings offer a more playful way to explore the range.
The tasting room opens daily, making it easy to combine a flight with lunch, a picnic or an overnight stay.
Restaurants and Picnics
De Herenhuis 1692 serves a small seasonal menu in the historic manor house. De Vliet Country Bistro offers relaxed family dining, while Banghoek Lounge opens for dinner.
Grapes and Greens picnics are arranged on the lawns near a children's play area. Advance reservations are advisable for restaurants and picnics, particularly over weekends.
Stay at Zorgvliet
The Country Lodge provides a tranquil base in the Banghoek Valley, with vineyard and mountain views and easy access to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.
