DeMorgenzon Wine Estate
High-altitude garden vineyards, benchmark Chenin Blanc and classical music in the cool Stellenbosch Kloof.
DeMorgenzon pairs cool south-facing slopes and biodiverse gardens with award-winning Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah and one of the Cape’s most distinctive tasting settings.
Overview
DeMorgenzon occupies a high, cool pocket of the Stellenbosch Kloof, where south-facing vineyard slopes rise from around 200 to almost 400 metres above sea level. The 90-hectare property combines 45 hectares of precision vineyards with a richly planted garden and broad views towards False Bay and Cape Town.
The estate is especially celebrated for finely poised Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay, alongside aromatic Syrah and carefully composed blends. Its name means “the morning sun”, reflecting the early light that reaches these elevated slopes.
The Garden Vineyards
Vineyard blocks sit among flowers, trees and indigenous vegetation rather than forming an uninterrupted agricultural landscape. Detailed studies of climate, soil, altitude, slope and drainage guide the placement of cultivars across weathered granite-based soils.
Cooling breezes from False Bay and the predominantly southern aspect create fresh, slow-ripening conditions. These cooler microclimates are central to the estate's vibrant acidity, aromatic clarity and restrained style.
Music in the Vineyards
Classical music drifts through the garden vineyards, giving DeMorgenzon one of the Winelands' most distinctive atmospheres. The tradition expresses the estate's belief that winegrowing should be both precise and harmonious.
Chenin Blanc at the Centre
Reserve Chenin Blanc is the estate benchmark, produced from low-yielding vines planted in 1972 on decomposed granite. Indigenous fermentation and measured oak maturation build texture while retaining pear, citrus and stone-fruit freshness.
The Reserve Chardonnay and Syrah extend the same site-focused approach, while the Maestro blends explore Mediterranean and Bordeaux varieties. The accessible DMZ range offers a broad introduction to the estate.
Wine Tasting
The tasting room is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with final seating 30 minutes before closing. Visitors can taste individual wines across the DMZ, Maestro and Reserve ranges and order a platter for two.
DeMorgenzon operates cashlessly, accepting cards and EFT. Booking is advised, and arriving by 16:00 allows enough time for an unhurried tasting and a look across the gardens.
