Neil Ellis Wines
A pioneering family winery expressing Stellenbosch, Elgin, Groenekloof and Piekenierskloof through carefully chosen vineyard sites.
Neil Ellis Wines pairs a pioneering site-selection philosophy with refined Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Rhône varieties, plus an on-site restaurant.
Overview
Neil Ellis Wines is a family-run Stellenbosch producer built on the belief that outstanding wine begins with the right vineyard. From its Helshoogte Road home, the winery presents an unusually broad view of Cape terroir through carefully selected sites in Stellenbosch, Groenekloof, Elgin and Piekenierskloof.
The portfolio moves from regional wines to limited site-specific bottlings and the flagship Webb Ellis blend. Visitors can compare varieties across different landscapes, then stay for lunch at the contemporary on-site restaurant.
A Pioneering Approach
Neil Ellis began making wine independently in 1984, sourcing grapes while working from rented cellar space. At a time when estate-grown wine dominated the local model, he pursued vineyards where each variety could best express a distinctive origin.
That approach developed into a respected family wine business. The next generation now works alongside Neil, combining decades of experience with modern viticulture, technology and a continuing focus on site.
Four Cape Landscapes
Stellenbosch supplies structured Cabernet Sauvignon and includes the cool Jonkershoek Valley and Bottelary Hills. Elgin provides slow-ripening Chardonnay, Groenekloof contributes dryland Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, and old Piekenierskloof bush vines produce expressive Grenache.
These contrasting origins allow the tasting room to explore how altitude, soil, climate and exposure shape the same winemaking philosophy in different ways.
Winemaking and Sustainability
The cellar uses minimal intervention to retain a clear sense of place. Single-vineyard and single-block wines sit alongside regional bottlings designed to express the broader identity of their source area.
Neil Ellis Wines is IPW and WIETA certified. Its environmental work includes cover crops, hand harvesting, water monitoring, recycling, energy reduction and the removal of invasive vegetation.
Tasting and Restaurant
The tasting room is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00. Tastings can move from the accessible regional range to Jonkershoek Cabernet Sauvignon, Whitehall Chardonnay and other site-specific wines.
The restaurant operates daily from 11:00 to 16:30, serving a concise menu of platters, flatbreads and seasonal dishes with suggested wine pairings. Booking is advisable for a combined tasting and lunch visit.
