Rustenberg Wine Estate
A historic Simonsberg estate pairing acclaimed Cabernet and Chardonnay with the celebrated Schoongezicht Garden.
Rustenberg combines more than three centuries of wine history, Barlow family custodianship, flagship Cabernet and Chardonnay, public gardens and Simonsberg conservation land.
Overview
Rustenberg Wine Estate occupies an expansive valley beneath the Simonsberg outside Stellenbosch. Founded in 1682 and owned by the Barlow family since 1941, it combines a long winemaking history with internationally recognised Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Bordeaux-style blends.
A visit extends beyond the tasting room to the public Schoongezicht Manor House Garden, a historic werf, oak-lined farm roads, grazing Red Angus cattle and extensive conservation land on the mountain.
More Than Three Centuries
Winegrowing at Rustenberg dates to 1682. Rustenberg and neighbouring Schoongezicht flourished in the early nineteenth century before economic decline and vine disease damaged both properties.
John X Merriman and Sir Jacob Barry revived the farms from 1892, beginning an unbroken period of wine production. Peter and Pamela Barlow bought Rustenberg in 1941, acquired Schoongezicht in 1945 and reunited the properties.
The Barlow Family
Simon and Rozanne Barlow began a major renewal in 1987, including a new winery, vineyard replanting and the restoration of Schoongezicht Manor House Garden. Their son Murray later joined the family business, continuing a multigenerational focus on estate quality.
Vineyards and Conservation
The 880-hectare estate includes roughly 120 hectares of vines, pasture for cattle, historic buildings and large areas of protected mountain fynbos. It forms part of the Greater Simonsberg Mountain Conservancy.
Grapes are hand harvested in the cool early morning. Vineyard blocks and even sections within blocks are monitored and picked separately, then vinified on their own before blending decisions are made.
Flagship and Site-Specific Wines
John X Merriman is the estate's Cabernet-led Bordeaux blend and one of the two principal flagships, alongside the barrel-fermented Stellenbosch Chardonnay.
The site-specific range includes Five Soldiers Chardonnay and Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon. These small-volume wines receive detailed vineyard management, longer oak maturation and extra time to develop before release.
Tasting Room and Garden
The tasting room occupies the estate's former stables and offers a six-wine general tasting or a focused site-specific tasting. Booking is recommended and groups are limited to eight people.
After tasting, visitors can walk through the public Schoongezicht Garden, enjoy the roses and birdlife or follow the labyrinth. The estate sells biltong and nuts but does not operate a restaurant.
