Overview
Nestled between the dramatic Simonsberg and Drakenstein Mountains in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley, Boschendal is one of South Africa’s oldest and most iconic wine farms. Established in 1685, it combines over three centuries of history with award-winning wines, exceptional farm-to-table dining, luxury accommodation and unforgettable outdoor experiences.
Famous for its magnificent Cape Dutch architecture, sprawling gardens and working farm, Boschendal offers an authentic Winelands experience – from picnics beneath ancient oaks and premium tastings to cycling through vineyards and family adventures.
History
Boschendal was founded in 1685, making it one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa. Originally granted to French Huguenot settlers, it became known for its fertile soils and beautiful Cape Dutch homestead. Many of the original buildings have been carefully restored and remain among the country’s finest examples of Cape Dutch architecture.
The estate takes its name from the Dutch bos-en-dal — “wood and valley” — a fitting description for its setting in a broad, beautiful basin beneath the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains. At its heart lies a historic werf with a beautifully preserved Cape Dutch homestead, while an ancient oak tree still shades the historic Rhône Homestead. More than three centuries on, Boschendal combines its heritage with sustainable farming, premium hospitality and award-winning wines, carefully preserving its historic buildings and landscapes for future generations.
Farm Life & Sustainability
Boschendal is a working farm where regenerative agriculture guides everyday life. The estate uses regenerative methods to enrich its soil, promote biodiversity and provide a better life for its animals, while orchards, vineyards and vegetable gardens supply exceptional produce to its restaurants and farm shop. An Alien Clearing and Water Conservation Programme, running since 2015, has regenerated hundreds of hectares of land, helping restore rivers and indigenous vegetation. The result is an authentic farm atmosphere that extends well beyond wine tasting.
Experiences
Boschendal offers one of the widest selections of activities in the Winelands. Visitors can enjoy guided wine tastings, relaxed picnics on the estate lawns, seasonal farm-to-table dining and a farm shop and butchery, or explore the landscape on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike along the estate’s trails. A Tree House and kids’ play area make it especially family-friendly, and luxury cottages and accommodation allow guests to experience the estate after the day visitors have left.

Horse Riding at Boschendal
Boschendal runs the rides itself and sells them by skill level rather than by route, which means a beginner is not put out behind someone who rides every weekend. Weekday slots run four deep from ten in the morning to five in the afternoon, weekends three. There are fifteen minute pony rides for small children on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and unbookable ones alongside the picnics at weekends.
