The Winelands sit inland from the city, where the coastal plain runs up against the mountains and the valleys open out behind them. A tour day settles into a rhythm early. A drive out, tastings at a small number of estates, a long lunch somewhere in the middle, and a slower road home.
Most days are built around two or three of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. Stellenbosch is the oldest and the densest of the three, with estates close enough together that you can see several without much driving between them. Franschhoek sits in a closed valley and trades on setting as much as on wine. Paarl is broader and quieter, with bigger properties and longer views.
Which estates you visit is the part that changes most from day to day, and it is the part worth telling us about when you enquire. Private and shared vehicles are both possible, and whether lunch is part of the plan is up to you.
