Guided quad biking on the Atlantis Dunes inside the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve. No experience or driving licence is needed, and a briefing, helmet and guide come with the ride.
The Atlantis dunes are a field of mobile white sand inside the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve, about an hour north of Cape Town. It is open, unvegetated and considerably larger than it looks from the entrance.
Riding is guided and starts with a safety briefing and an orientation lap. The bikes are stable and forgiving, and most first-timers have the hang of one within about ten minutes. Groups ride at the pace of the slowest rider. Helmets and hairnets are supplied.
Access is by nature reserve permit, arranged with the ride. Wind matters more than temperature out here: a windy summer afternoon means sand in your face for the whole ride, which makes a morning slot the better one.
