Jonkershoek Nature Reserve

A CapeNature reserve nine kilometres from town, with mountain trails and river pools

Jonkershoek Nature Reserve sits about nine kilometres from Stellenbosch at the head of the Jonkershoek Valley, managed by CapeNature. Four marked hiking trails run from 5.3 to 18 kilometres across easy to demanding ground, four rivers rise in the mountains here, and the rock pools and waterfalls along them are the reason many people come. Mountain biking is available on adjoining forestry land for a separate fee. Access is on a first-come basis and the circular road takes only twenty cars at a time.

Jonkershoek is where the Winelands stop being about farms. Nine kilometres out of town the valley narrows into steep fynbos-covered mountains, four rivers come off them, and the pools and waterfalls along those rivers are what most people are actually walking towards. Four marked trails run from a manageable 5.3 kilometres to an 18-kilometre day, and the Panorama route around the head of the valley is the one that earns the name. Mountain bikers use the adjoining forestry land under a separate arrangement. There is no booking for day visitors, but the circular road holds only twenty cars, so weekends reward an early start.
