This route crosses the eastern slopes of Table Mountain between Constantia Nek and Kloof Nek, passing through Cecilia Plantation, Kirstenbosch, Newlands Forest and Rhodes Memorial. Unlike a trail-centre loop, it functions as a continuous cycling corridor across several parts of the mountain.
SANBI opened the route in December 2016, using existing service roads and two short purpose-built singletrack links to connect the corridor. Signage demarcates the permitted route through Kirstenbosch, where cyclists are required to remain on the designated line.
Route description
The route links Constantia Nek and Kloof Nek through Cecilia Plantation, the upper Kirstenbosch service roads, Newlands Forest and Rhodes Memorial. Through Kirstenbosch it follows existing service roads above the Garden and Irrigation Dam. Two short sections of singletrack were constructed to connect existing tracks in Cecilia Plantation and Newlands Forest when the route opened in December 2016.
Staying on the route
This is a designated transit corridor rather than general cycling access through Kirstenbosch. SANBI states that cyclists must remain on the demarcated route and may not deviate from it. Follow the route signage through the estate rather than branching onto other paths.
Distance and difficulty
SANBI’s published information for this route does not provide a distance, elevation figure or difficulty grade. We therefore leave those figures unspecified rather than attaching an unverified measurement or rating to the route.
