Peter Matkovich was commissioned in the mid-1990s to lay eighteen holes across three farms on the edge of Stellenbosch, and the farming is still the setting rather than a backdrop. Fairways run between vineyards, olive groves and lavender, riverine bush follows the lower ground, and the Helderberg stands over the property.
It is parkland golf with a working wine estate around it. The signature is the closing hole, an 18th that finishes beneath a large tree standing in play and which the club calls one of its most photographed. On the club’s own account the course sits 31st in Golf Digest’s SA Top 100 for 2024.

The course
The club’s own description is an excellent mix of parkland holes, with fairways surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields and riverine and mountain scenery beyond them.
Two holes get named. The 13th plays across water with the Helderberg in view, and the 18th is the one with the tree in play. Markers are colour-coded for different standards, so the course can be taken on from more than one length.
Playing De Zalze Golf Club as a visitor
The club’s rules open with the line that visitors are welcome, while reserving the right to control visitor access under the published course rules. The one stated carve-out is that monthly competitions are for members and their guests only.
No green fee is published anywhere on the club’s site, and fees are settled at the pro shop before play, so the figure comes from a conversation rather than a rate card. The club has been cashless since early 2025. Booking runs the same way. The rules page still links an online tee sheet, but that link no longer resolves to a De Zalze sheet, which leaves email and the pro shop phone as the working routes in.
Caddies are registered by the club’s caddie master and issued identification disks, and outside caddies are not permitted unless arranged through a booked golf day. Carts are available, with no driver under eighteen.
Dress is quality smart casual throughout: collared shirts, tailored trousers or shorts and smart unfaded denim, with no flip-flops, Crocs, beachwear, jogging gear or sleeveless tops, and soft spikes only.
What is on site
Lievens Restaurant, De Kombuis, the Sunset Terrace and Bar, a halfway house and the De Zalze Deli, alongside a function room, a pro shop and a coaching academy. Estate accommodation is available if you want to stay on site.
