Avirodha is a small studio on Valley Road designed around a Japanese tea house, teaching yoga and Pilates with a rope wall and a yoga swing. A drop-in covers a single class with no membership, and five-week cards are available for longer stays.
Avirodha is a yoga and Pilates studio on Valley Road in Hout Bay, built in 2009 as a purpose-designed space modelled on a Japanese tea house rather than converted from a hall or a gym. The intention was a room with ambiance rather than mirrors, and it reads that way.
The teaching covers yoga and Pilates, with two pieces of equipment that are unusual in a studio this size: a rope wall, which lets postures be supported and traction applied through the spine, and a yoga swing for suspended work. Lomi lomi massage is offered alongside the classes.
A drop-in covers a single class with no membership, and five-week cards are available for one or two classes a week if you are staying longer.
Classes need a minimum of three people to run and there is a twenty-four hour cancellation policy, so it is worth confirming your place rather than arriving unannounced.
Finding it takes a moment. From the circle where Valley Road meets Victoria Road, follow Valley Road towards town over three speed bumps, passing EarthWorx and Harmony. The studio entrance is the first gate on the right after the last bump, signed on the gate, with parking on Valley Road outside.
