Visitors can buy a single drop-in valid for any class on the schedule, or a five- or ten-session bundle that runs for three months, with no membership and no joining fee. Sessions are coached and scaled to the person, so arriving without a CrossFit background is normal.
The Bloc is a CrossFit affiliate in Parklands, north of Cape Town on the way to Blouberg, and it has been running coached group classes since 2013. It is a gym built around a class timetable rather than a gym floor you wander onto, and every session is led by a coach.
For a visitor, the useful thing is that you do not need a membership. The Bloc sells once-off packages aimed at people training while they are in Cape Town: a single drop-in valid for any class on the schedule, or five- and ten-session bundles valid for three months. Packages are location specific, so buy the one for Blouberg rather than the Melkbos gym up the coast.
The programme covers standard CrossFit group classes, a hybrid strength and conditioning stream, Olympic weightlifting focused on the snatch and the clean and jerk, and aerobic capacity sessions on rowers, ski ergs and air bikes. Classes are scaled to the person, so arriving without a CrossFit background is normal rather than awkward.
The Blouberg gym is the operator's flagship site, with a large equipment floor, a dedicated warm-up area, a kids' area and a coffee shop. There is also a kids' CrossFit programme and an onsite recovery and biokinetics practice.
Check the class schedule before you travel, because access is by class rather than open-gym time.
