A steakhouse in a historic town centre building, where dry-aged and specialty cuts are brought to the table to choose from. Wooden floors, leather booths and a shaded courtyard at the back.
The Fat Butcher answers the question “where should we eat tonight” more often than anywhere else in town. It occupies a historic building a block off Church Street — wooden floors, leather booths, a shaded courtyard at the back — and it opens every day of the week, which in Stellenbosch counts for a great deal.
Your waiter brings a tray of cuts to the table, including several that never reach the menu, and talks you through them. Pasture-reared and grain-finished, some of it dry-aged. There are Dormer lamb ribs and shanks, burgers, porcini risotto and proper salads for anyone not there for the beef — though most people are. The in-store butchery will sell you the same meat to cook at home.
