Overview

Steenberg Golf Club is an 18-hole course inside Steenberg Estate in Tokai, in Cape Town’s Constantia Valley. A public online tee sheet makes it practical for visitors to check availability and arrange a round outside the club’s member-only periods.

Steenberg Golf Club

Course Character

Designed by Peter Matkovich & Hayes, the course runs through vineyards, pine forest and gentle waterways beneath the mountains. The club describes a hybrid plan that leaves room for bump-and-run shots around the greens, balanced by strategically placed sand and water hazards.

The par-three 7th plays to an island green set among sand and water. The par-three 14th is built around a green the club describes as 76 metres long and the largest single green in southern Africa; its playing length changes substantially with the tee and pin positions.

Playing as a Visitor

Visitors can use Steenberg’s public tee sheet to check current availability and pricing. Online bookings open up to three months ahead and are final only after payment. Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays are member-only, so choose another period when planning a visitor round.

Green fees use dynamic pricing rather than one evergreen rate. Check the official visitor page or tee sheet for the current amount for your date and time.

Practice and Hire

The practice ground is 50 metres from the clubhouse, with 18 dedicated hitting bays, eight grass bays, three putting greens and a chipping and bunker area. Players booked on the course have unlimited access to these practice facilities. The EOGA Golf Academy and Pro Shop are onsite, and clubs, carts, trolleys and electric trolleys can be arranged through the Pro Shop; carts remain subject to weather and course conditions.

Good to Know

Recognised golf attire is required. Golf shirts should be tucked in unless tailored to waist length; cargo-style side pockets are not permitted, socks must be visible, and golf shoes must have soft spikes or rubber soles.

Be at the tee at least 10 minutes before your booked time. The club also requires a 10-minute halfway stop between the nines. Visiting players who are not accompanied by a Steenberg member are encouraged to hire a caddie, and caddies can be arranged through the Pro Shop.

Facilities

The golf club sits within Steenberg Estate, so the hotel and spa, the vineyards and the Tryn and Bistro Sixteen82 restaurants adjoin it. The clubhouse holds the Terrace Bar, serving breakfast through to early dinner, a halfway house, valet-attended locker rooms and a pro shop. Practice areas run to a driving range, three putting greens and a chipping and bunker facility, and function venues can be booked.
